Carissa , 26 years old, signed up to support Suicide Prevention Australia via their Hike to Halve Suicides Trek late last year.  “I signed up to do the Hike to Halve Suicide Trek for many reasons. I suffer from a mental illness known as Borderline Personality Disorder and have watched friends and loved ones suffer the impact of suicide. Having lived experience of suicide ideation myself, I decided to raise awareness and fight the stigma by committing to this trek,” she says.

Carissa says her life has changed and transformed since she signed up to for the adventure. “I have more confidence to strive for what I want and not stop until I get it. I also have had pathway to the career opportunities I want and the people I have met remind me of who I am and what I have been through.”

Her advice for anyone who want to completes a challenge like this? “Stick it out even when it gets rough, surround yourself with the right people and the right audience and never ever doubt yourself and what you are trying to achieve!”

Carissa and her team raised an incredible $45,000 which will support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members in urban and remote location suicide prevention programs.

“It was magical fun and this is the happiest I’ve been in a long time!”
