Imagine reaching the top of the highest freestanding mountain, the mighty Mount Kilimanjaro, knowing you’ve climbed to help burn survivors achieve their full potential.

On this 9-day adventure, you will be pushed both physically and mentally as you trek through five different climatic zones under the care of experienced local guides.

Trekking from farmlands to verdant rainforest, through alpine meadow and across the barren lunar-like landscape to the summit, you’ll view the stunning sight of the sun rising over the East African plains below.

What makes this experience even more spectacular is knowing you’re there because you’ve raised funds for The Avela Foundation to help burn survivors achieve their full potential.

Every dollar you raise through this incredible challenge will go towards the sustainability of the Umatter program, a psychological support program for burn survivors and their families. Your fundraising efforts will also enable us to purchase our second Lumenis Ultra Pulse Laser machine for the Johannesburg area.

The physical pain of a burn is horrific, but the worry, fear, and emotional pain it causes to the survivor and his/her family can be just as difficult.

Emotional support is a must after a trauma like this and the laser machine will also help with their scars.

Scars are a painful reminder of their tragedy. Burn disfigurement affects a child’s body-esteem, self confidence, social interaction and identity. Now with this revolutionary medical procedure, they have a chance to erase the past and look into the future.

Devastating facts about burns in South Africa

– 12% of fatal accidents are caused by burns

– Burns are the most common preventable cause of death in children 0-4 years old

– Burns are the third most common preventable cause of death for children under 18 years old

– 8 out of every 100,000 people die from burn injuries, this is 2-4 times higher than in developed countries

– in South Africa approx. 6500 children (1-14Y) die a year from burn related injuries and 75 % are fluid related burns.

– fire related mortality rate in Africa for children under 5 is 32.9 per 100,000

Your involvement as a fundraiser will help us decrease the number of fatalities by educating communities on burn prevention and assist The Avela Foundation together with The Smile Foundation by offering burn survivors and their families the crucial psychological support required to prepare them for the future.
