The Baker Institute’s Hike for Health 2021 takes you right to the heart of Australia, where you’ll trek with a team of like-minded passionate supporters.

The Baker Institute’s Hike for Health 2021 is your chance to take on an unforgettable adventure trek in Australia’s Red Centre. You’ll be part of an incredible team, raising awareness and funds for the Baker Institute to continue their life saving research into treating, managing and preventing heart disease, diabetes and their complications. You’ll stand united as a team knowing the difference you’ve made.

On this adventure, you will trek the legendary Larapinta Trail, regarded as one of Australia’s premier walking tracks. From the old Alice Springs Telegraph Station to the peak of Mount Sonder, the trail stretches 223 kilometres along the backbone of the West MacDonnell Ranges. Over 5 days, you will journey along the most spectacular and rewarding sections of the trail, trekking over 60 kilometres. You will follow Aboriginal Dreaming tracks and explore the beautiful mountains, valleys, rivers and the dramatic desert landscapes of the Red Centre.

By day, you’ll trek through the ochre-landscapes of the outback, witnessing the sacred sites of the Arrernte people and by night you’ll camp under the stars, falling asleep to the sounds of native wildlife.

Best of all, you’ll be raising vital funds for the Baker Institute to help Australians live healthier for longer.

When you take on this extraordinary adventure of a lifetime, you’ll be fundraising for the Baker Institute to continue their vital research into heart disease and diabetes. Your donation will make a direct impact on improving Aboriginal health in remote communities, and help to protect children from the deadly HTLV-1 virus.

Central Australia has the highest reported prevalence of HTLV-1 infection worldwide. The institute’s research suggests that 40% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults carry the virus in remote communities. There are around 1,500 adults in the Alice Springs region; however, the endemic area extends into Western Australia and South Australia where over 7,000 adults are likely to be HTLV-1 infected. This is something we are desperate to find a solution for, and with your help we have a real chance.
Here is how your fundraising efforts can help:

    • $50 will provide one person in a remote community a free heart health screening test and assess their risk of having the HTLV-1 virus.
    • $250 will provide one expectant mother with the HTLV-1 virus health monitoring to better understand and identify those who carry the virus, and help prevent transmission to their babies.
    • $500 will enable a nurse educator to visit one remote community to explain how to better understand the nature of heart disease: how it develops and how early intervention can lead to improved outcomes.
