Join Black Dog Institute’s Kokoda Challenge for an extraordinary adventure to support Australians living with mental illness and promote mental wellbeing for all.

Regarded as one of the world’s greatest treks, the Kokoda Track links the south and north coast of Papua New Guinea across 96 kilometres of rocky mountain terrain, tropical rainforest and remote villages.

On this adventure, you’ll lace up your boots to trek with The Black Dog Institute supporters, raising money to help fund education workshops, mental health training and community awareness programs.

By day, you’ll trek Papua New Guinea’s tropical rainforest – the terrain as challenging as it is beautiful. As nightfall descends, you will stay in isolated camps, swapping stories with local Koiari and Orokaiva people and falling asleep to the nocturnal sounds of the jungle. Though the Track is challenging, you’ll be rewarded with an unmatched sense of accomplishment and the knowledge that YOU have made a huge difference to The Black Dog Institute and helped build a mentally healthy world.

What kind of people will take on the Kokoda Challenge? Anyone with a sense of adventure and desire to help make the world better for people living with mental illness. This is guide-led group adventure so as long as you’re relatively fit and willing to train, you don’t need to be an expert trekker.

“You will meet people from all different walks of life who have come together for the same reason… I now have life-long friendships that I greatly cherish from that Trek.” – 2018 Kokoda Trek participant

By taking on the Kokoda Challenge for Black Dog Institute, you’ll help create a mentally healthier world and support people living with mental illness.

The funds you raise will support all of the Institute’s work, as well as contribute to the expansion and continued national rollout of our education workshops, mental health training and community awareness programs.

These programs are vital, particularly in regional and rural areas, to ensure that all Australians have access to the care, information and resources that they need. Your generous donation will help to:

  • Deliver mental health training workshops to GPs, mental health nurses, Indigenous health workers, psychologist and other allied health professionals so that they can accurately diagnose, treat and manage their patients with mental illness and suicidal thoughts.
  • Continue to develop and deliver up-to-date and best practice mental health resources for public access throughout Australia.
  • Expand our network of volunteer lived experience presenters, and train them to effectively deliver mental health literacy and awareness programs to their communities, in particular in those parts of the country where access to help and resources may be limited.
  • Continue to build our youth-based education programs and help us to roll them out in Australian high schools nationally.
