Absolutely amazing. The best experience I’ve had.

Romayne Westwood, Bob Brown Foundation Into takayna 2018

The spectacular takayna/Tarkine wilderness is a vast mosaic of ancient forests, wild beaches, heathlands and rivers covering more than 495,000 hectares in northwest Tasmania. But it’s under threat, and the Bob Brown Foundation is leading the campaign to protect it. Because in this climate emergency, protecting these large, intact ecosystems for their carbon stores, biodiversity, wilderness values and Aboriginal heritage is critical.

The Bob Brown Foundation’s national campaign has enabled hundreds of citizens to take peaceful, direct action in takayna at our Rainforest Rescue Camps. People power has kept the logging out of these magnificent forests, but they’re still in danger and we need to raise half a million dollars to run our peaceful rainforest defender camps, pay legal fees and continue awareness campaigns.

On this incredible four-day adventure, you’ll hike takayna. Along the way, you’ll walk beneath ancient rainforest canopies, climb Mount Farrell, marvel at Montezuma Falls and travel by boat down the Pieman River. Most importantly, you’ll be raising much-needed funds for the Bob Brown Foundation so it can continue its fight to save this incredible part of Australia’s natural heritage. You’ll have the special experience of meeting Bob Brown at his spectacular home at the foot of the Great Western Tiers and join him for a billy tea.

The funds you raise on this adventure will go towards the ongoing protection of takayna wilderness. Tax-deductible donations are Bob Brown Foundation’s lifeblood, as it receives no funding from government bodies and relies entirely on the community to do this critical work.

For instance, it costs $60,000 to run our Rainforest Rescue Camp for six months. That money pays for a camp coordinator, camping supplies, transport, non-violent direct action training, legal support, and climbing and safety equipment.

To spread our takayna message, we also need to hire a campaign manager and continue to create documentaries like Australia’s Largest Rainforest in Crisis. Every dollar you raise will go directly to action that protects takayna.

How challenging is this adventure?

The takayna trek is ranked 3/5. While no extensive trekking experience is required prior to registering, our adventures are designed for people who are relatively fit and willing to train. The trek is a physical challenge, and the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy the experience.

You can expect the days to vary from easy exploration walks to day-long hikes over rough terrain. You should be able to walk comfortably for 6–8 hours over consecutive days.

You will be well supported on the adventure, with the guides and your team all cheering you on. You are free to move at your own pace and we will take frequent breaks.

How do I fundraise?

Never fundraised before? Not sure where to start? No worries, we don’t expect you to do it alone. You will have regular support from the Inspired Adventures fundraising team, who will help you make a fundraising plan to meet your target. Alongside personalised coaching, we will also send you lots of ideas and resources on how to fundraise. From online fundraising to trivia nights, to bake sales and out-of-the-box ideas, we have years and years of tried and tested tips to make your fundraising a success.

Who will I be travelling with?

We believe small group travel is better for the planet, and better for you. Our adventures usually have 10 – 20 people aged from 18 to 90+ (younger ages considered on request). You can be sure that you have all come together with the shared purpose of making a difference to others and having the adventure of a lifetime.

The group will be led by a local tour guide with expert knowledge of the region. Many groups will also be accompanied by an Inspired Adventures team leader or doctor to support and motivate the team.

Where applicable, a charity representative may also join the team. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about your chosen charity and their work.

We understand the dilemma of making travel plans when the world feels unpredictable right now. You can still register for an Inspired Adventure in complete confidence, because we promise to look after you should COVID-19 travel bans affect your plans.

If COVID-19 travel bans mean your Inspired Adventure cannot go ahead as scheduled, we will endeavour to reschedule the departure to a later date to allow you still to travel as planned.
