The JDRF Larapinta Trek 2019 will help raise funds to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat type 1 diabetes and its complications.

The Larapinta Trek 2019 brings together supporters from various Australian charities for an adventure trek in Central Australia. You’ll be part of an incredible team, raising awareness and funds for a cause close to your heart. You’ll stand united, as a team, on the Larapinta Trail, knowing the difference you’ve made.

You will trek the Larapinta Trail, regarded as one of Australia’s premier walking tracks. From the old Alice Springs Telegraph Station to the peak of Mount Sonder, the trail stretches 223 kilometres along the backbone of the West MacDonnell Ranges. Over five days, you will journey along the most spectacular and rewarding sections of the trail, trekking over 60 kilometres. You will follow Aboriginal Dreaming tracks and explore the beautiful mountains, valleys, rivers and the dramatic desert landscapes of the Red Centre.

By day, you will visit sites sacred to the Arrernte people and trek beside one of the world’s oldest river systems. At night, you will fall asleep to the sounds of native wildlife under a blanket of stars.

Best of all, you will be raising vital funds for JDRF to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat type 1 diabetes and its complications.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) can affect anyone at any age or stage. There is no way to prevent it, and there is currently no cure. Living with T1D involves the need to inject insulin multiple times a day or receive insulin via a pump worn on the body. People with T1D need to check their blood glucose levels several times a day by painful finger pricks to avoid dangerous high or low blood glucose episodes.

Every dollar raised on this incredible adventure will go towards more of the best and most promising T1D research, focusing on the areas of cure, prevention and treatment. Each research project has the potential to change the lives of the 120,000 Australians living with T1D.

$1,000 can fund one month of testing and glucose monitoring equipment for one person enrolled in a clinical trial. Clinical trials are the final step in getting new treatments and therapies for T1D to the people who need them. Clinical research is different to lab-based research because it involves humans. Clinical trials test potential new treatments in volunteers, in safe, carefully monitored studies, before they’re made accessible to the wider population.
