“The trek was amazing! Truly life changing. A great group of people. An experience I will cherish for life. Solitude is so good for the soul.”

Lauren, Inspired adventurer, 2018

More than 125,000 Australians are living with type 1 diabetes (T1D). It can affect anyone, at any age. There is no way to prevent it and currently no cure.

Join JDRF One Trek NZ 2022 and, with every step you take, you’ll raise vital funds to lessen the burden of T1D and help turn type 1 into type none.

Beginning in Christchurch, over six days you’ll discover the unspoiled beauty of New Zealand’s South Island. Traversing the stunning Southern Alps, you’ll trek through lush alpine meadow and into steep, glaciated valleys. You’ll gaze upon the turquoise surface of Lake Tekapo and bask in the majesty of awe-inspiring Aoraki, New Zealand’s highest mountain. Best of all, you’ll be trekking alongside other like-minded fundraisers, all united in a common cause.

As part of this incredible adventure, you’ll raise vital funds to help JDRF improve the lives of Australians living with type 1 diabetes (T1D).

Living with T1D involves injecting insulin multiple times a day or receiving insulin infusions via a pump worn on the body. People with T1D also need to check their blood glucose levels several times a day with painful finger pricks or by wearing a Continuous Glucose Monitor, in order to avoid dangerous high or low blood glucose episodes.

Through your fundraising and physical efforts, you’ll support JDRF’s innovative research to cure, prevent and treat T1D.

$10 can buy blood collection tubes for 30 clinical trial participants

$50 can pay for three HbA1c tests to measure how children respond to a new closed loop system

$100 can cover an antibody test to screen one person for T1D risk

$250 can fund the collection and transport of five blood samples for antibody testing

$500 can pay for one year of participant monitoring in a clinical trial of a new prevention drug

$2,500 can cover the hospital stay for one person in a clinical trial of a new under-the-skin islet transplant

How challenging is this adventure?

The Southern Alps trek is ranked 3/5. While no extensive trekking experience is required prior to registering, our adventures are designed for people who are relatively fit and willing to train. The trek is a physical challenge, and the fitter you are, the more you’ll enjoy the experience.

You can expect the days to vary from easy exploration walks to day-long hikes over rough terrain. You should be able to walk comfortably for 4–6 hours over consecutive days.

You’ll be well supported on the adventure, with the guides and your team all cheering you on. You’re free to move at your own pace and we will take frequent breaks.

How do I fundraise?

Never fundraised before? Not sure where to start? No worries, we don’t expect you to do it alone. You will have regular support from the Inspired Adventures fundraising team, who will help you make a fundraising plan to meet your target. Alongside personalised coaching, we will also send you lots of ideas and resources on how to fundraise. From online fundraising to trivia nights, to bake sales and out-of-the-box ideas, we have years and years of tried and tested tips to make your fundraising a success.

Who will I be travelling with?

We believe small group travel is better for the planet, and better for you. Our adventures usually have 10 – 20 people aged from 18 to 90+ (younger ages considered on request). You can be sure that you have all come together with the shared purpose of making a difference to others and having the adventure of a lifetime.

The group will be led by a local tour guide with expert knowledge of the region. Many groups will also be accompanied by an Inspired Adventures team leader or doctor to support and motivate the team.

Where applicable, a charity representative may also join the team. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about your chosen charity and their work.

Do I need to have travel insurance?

Travel insurance is highly recommended for domestic adventures, to cover cancellation, hospital, emergency evacuation and lost luggage. We advise that you purchase your policy as soon as possible. It’s up to you to ensure you have fully comprehensive travel insurance and you’ll need to share these details with our team before departure. For more information, please visit www.inspiredadventures.com.au/travel-insurance-information.

We understand the dilemma of making travel plans when the world feels unpredictable right now. You can still register for an Inspired Adventure in complete confidence, because we promise to look after you should COVID-19 travel bans affect your plans.

If COVID-19 travel bans mean your Inspired Adventure cannot go ahead as scheduled, we will endeavour to reschedule the departure to a later date to allow you still to travel as planned.

Inspired Adventures requires that all travellers are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as described in government guidelines and ground operator requirements.

For more information please refer to the COVID-19 hub on our website.
