As part of Walk for Blood Cancer: El Camino 2018, you will join a group of inspiring individuals dedicated to supporting Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand (LBC) patients and their families living with a blood cancer or related blood condition.

On arrival in Madrid, Spain’s bustling capital city, you will set off on a guided tour, exploring the city’s highlights from past to present. You will then travel beyond city limits to embark on the Camino de Santiago.

From Sarria to Santiago, you will trek under the shade of old oak trees into peaceful hamlets set against the rolling green backdrop of Galicia. At night, you will experience Spain’s colourful culture and cuisine.

On what other adventure can you follow in the footsteps of the Romans, the Knights Templar, pilgrims and modern day adventurers to Santiago de Compostela?

Best of all, every step you take helps raise vital funds for LBC to continue to support those living with a blood cancer or serious blood condition.

Treatment for a blood cancer often needs to start immediately to provide the best possible chance of recovery and can continue for months and often years. A blood cancer diagnosis can strike any one at any time and often with little warning.

It is understandable that this means that patients and their families can have their life turned upside down overnight, resulting in a number of implications including; stress and emotional issues, not being able to work, relationships being put under strain and loss of fertility.

Our team of Support Services Coordinators are there every step of the way. The fundraising received from the Walk for Blood Cancer will go towards ensuring that we continue to offer support to families right across the length and breadth of New Zealand.

We have Support Centres in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch and are set to open another one in Dunedin . Our Support Services team are based in these centres and from there, travel over 70,000 kilometres each year to provide support to patients and their families.

Some examples of the programmes offered by
Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand (LBC) include:

Kid’s Clubs to support siblings and children of those with a blood cancer aged 5-12 years old. They learn coping mechanisms and can share their stories in a safe, positive environment.

LBC Winter Workshops – a national roadshow with a top speaker to upskill and engage the health professionals working with blood cancer patients and their caregivers.

Regular support and networking groups – enabling patients and family members to get together and share their journeys and experiences.
