Join Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand’s Outback Trek 2019 and make a difference to those experiencing blood cancer.

Central Australia is abundant with natural beauty, offering everything from ancient red rock formations, spectacular gorges and canyons to crowd-pleasing starry nights, breathtaking sunrises and surreal sunsets. As part of Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand’s Outback Trek for Blood Cancer 2019, you will experience it all and more as you trek for 5 days along the legendary Larapinta Trail.

The Larapinta Trail is regarded as one of Australia’s finest long-distance walking tracks. From the old Alice Springs Telegraph Station to the peak of Mount Sonder, the trail stretches 223km along the backbone of the West MacDonnell Ranges.

On this incredible adventure, you will trek over 60km along the trail’s most scenic sections. You will stand on ancient escarpments and gaze out upon the ochre-coloured landscapes of Central Australia. You will follow Aboriginal Dreaming tracks and trek beside one of the world’s oldest river systems.

By day, you will challenge yourself as you trek across the Red Centre, experiencing the diversity of desert habitats and visit sights sacred to the Arrernte people. At night, you will fall asleep to the sounds of native wildlife under a blanket of stars.

Best of all, with every kilometre you cover you will be helping Leukaemia & Blood Cancer support patients and their families living with a blood cancer.

There are over 21,000 people living with a blood cancer or related blood condition in New Zealand. Blood cancers combined (including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma) are one of the most common forms of cancer in the country.

Leukaemia is the most common childhood cancer and lymphoma is most the most common in young adults (16-24 year olds). The cause of blood cancer is unknown – it can strike any one at any time of any age or ethnicity and usually with very little warning.

Treatment for Leukaemia needs to start immediately to provide the best possible chance of recovery and can continue for months and often years. A blood cancer diagnosis can strike anyone at any time and often with little warning.

It is understandable that this means that the patient and their family can have their lives turned upside down overnight, often with huge implications, including financial.

Our team of Support Services Coordinators are there every step of the way. The fundraising received through this trip will go towards ensuring that we continue to offer this level of support no matter where you are in New Zealand.

Every dollar raised through this incredible adventure will go towards the many programmes run by LBC including:

Kids Clubs to support siblings and children of those with blood cancer aged 5-12 years old. They learn coping mechanisms and can share their stories in a safe, positive environment.

LBC Winter Workshops – a national roadshow with a top speaker to upskill and engage the health professionals working with blood cancer patients and their caregivers.

Regular support groups – increasingly popular, these groups throughout the country enable those with similar conditions to get together and share their journeys and experiences, often forming strong bonds with others.

Star Supporters groups to support the caregivers who often feel very isolated while they care for the patient – many giving up work and facing financial hardship. We need to look after their well-being as well and ensure that they know that they are not in this alone.
