“If I had to sum up the experience with one word, life-changing would be it. It was by far the best experience of my life to date. I will be back, that is for sure.”

— Imran Khan, Project Independence Larapinta 2021

Offering a myriad of raw and beautiful desert landscapes, the Larapinta Trail is one of Australia’s most premier walking trails. Together with a team of enthusiastic Project Independence supporters, you’ll spend 7 days discovering the rugged wilderness of the Northern Territory.

Beginning your journey on the outskirts of Alice Springs, you’ll follow the trail as it traverses the dramatic West MacDonnell Mountain Ranges. Whilst the trail can be rocky at times, expect to be rewarded with incredible 360° views of endless red desert and ancient bush. Along the way, learn about the traditional culture of the local Indigenous peoples and see some of their sacred sites, an unforgettable element of the experience.

With the support of expert guides, and the camaraderie of like-minded teammates, you’ll tackle the Larapinta Trail and get a taste of the Australian outback, all while helping support people with an intellectual disability gain independence through home ownership in safe, suitable and affordable housing.

The funds you raise as part of the Project Independence Larapinta trek will go directly to Project Independence, a social organisation working to provide housing and independence for people with an intellectual disability.

In Australia, people with an intellectual disability are among those least likely to ever attain home ownership. Often, this leaves them living in unsuitable or unsafe environments which can negatively impact their quality of life. This can mean living in an aged care facility in their 30s, or with family members who are unable to provide adequate care. People with an intellectual disability, already often pushed to the margins of society, deserve independence and choice over where and how they live.

As more money is raised, more housing can be built. By supporting Project Independence, you’ll help the over 250 people currently on the waitlist to get into Project Independence housing and start living independently.

You will have regular support from the Inspired Adventures fundraising team, who will help you make a fundraising plan to meet your target. Alongside personalised coaching, we will also send you lots of ideas and resources on how to fundraise. Who will I be travelling with?

We believe small group travel is better for the planet, and better for you. Our adventures usually have 10 – 20 people aged from 18 to 90+ (younger ages considered on request). You can be sure that you have all come together with the shared purpose of making a difference to others and having the adventure of a lifetime.

The group will be led by a local tour guide with expert knowledge of the region. Many groups will also be accompanied by an Inspired Adventures team leader or doctor to support and motivate the team.

Where applicable, a charity representative may also join the team. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about your chosen charity and their work.

We understand the dilemma of making travel plans when the world feels unpredictable right now. You can still register for an Inspired Adventure in complete confidence, because we promise to look after you should COVID-19 travel bans affect your plans.

If COVID-19 travel bans mean your Inspired Adventure cannot go ahead as scheduled, we will endeavour to reschedule the departure to a later date to allow you still to travel as planned.

Inspired Adventures requires that all travellers are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as described in government guidelines and ground operator requirements. For more information, please refer to our COVID-19 information page.
