Join Sanfilippo Children’s Foundation on the Australian Outback Marathon in 2021 and challenge yourself as you pound the red earth around Uluru and Kata Tjuta National Park and help support vital research projects that show potential to halt disease progression; repair damage caused by the condition; or improve the quality of life for children suffering from Sanfilippo.

Set against the backdrop of Australia’s iconic landscape, the Australian Outback Marathon with Sanfilippo Children’s Foundation is a chance to challenge yourself as you pound the red earth around Uluru and Kata Tjuta National Park.

This inspiring backdrop is perfect for runners of all experience levels who want to challenge themselves with the choice of completing the full marathon, half marathon, 11km and 6km courses.

Winding its way from One Tree Crossing and along Mala Road towards Heidi’s Corner the race comes to an end near Neaylon Corner. Consisting of hard-packed earth fire trails, bush tracks, sand dunes, soft sand, unsealed roads and sealed asphalt road, the course offers breath-taking views to inspire you over the last few kilometres.

Not only will you run this epic race in the heart of Australia, you can also take optional tours to discover more of this spectacular region and take in the natural surroundings of Uluru and Kata Tjuta. To top it off, every dollar you raise through this challenge will help bring Sanfilippo Children’s Foundation closer to enabling access to effective treatments and potentially improving the quality of life for children with Sanfilippo.

Sanfilippo is a rare genetic condition that causes fatal brain damage. Children with this condition have an enzyme deficiency which means they are unable to process the waste that builds up in their cells, causing damage throughout the body, especially the brain.

Sanfilippo is a type of childhood dementia with no approved treatment or cure. Life expectancy is just 12-20 years, and most patients never reach adulthood.

But there is hope.

Researchers around the world are working hard to find effective treatments and there are several emerging clinical treatments in or about to enter clinical trial.

To drive research for a world without Sanfilippo Syndrome, the Sanfilippo Children’s Foundation has a robust competitive research funding program in place.

The funds raised on the Australian Outback Marathon with Sanfilippo Children’s Foundation 2021 will help drive the research agenda – identifying and delivering research projects that show potential to halt disease progression; repair damage caused by the condition; or improve the quality of life for children suffering from Sanfilippo.
