Children diagnosed with Sanfilippo Syndrome rarely make it to adulthood. But we have hope that new research can improve outcomes for children with this devastating form of childhood dementia.

Join the Sanfilippo Sunrise Summit Trek 2021 and, with every step you take, you will raise vital funds to drive research for a world without Sanfilippo Syndrome.

As part of this incredible adventure, you will trek to the summit of Australia’s highest mountain, through subalpine meadow dotted with white gentian flowers, past snow-weathered gums and around granite outcrops carved by glacial waters.

Standing at the peak of Mount Kosciuszko, staring out across untouched wilderness, you will feel tired, yet inspired by your effort to give children living with Sanfilippo Syndrome hope for the future.

Sanfilippo Syndrome is a rare genetic condition that causes fatal brain damage. Children diagnosed with this type of childhood dementia rarely make it to adulthood. With your support the Sanfilippo Children’s Foundation can drive research for a world without Sanfilippo Syndrome and give children with Sanfilippo hope for the future.

As part of the Sanfilippo Sunrise Summit Trek 2021, the funds you raise will help:

  • Fund research which might halt progression of the condition, reverse damage caused or improve quality of life for children with the condition
  • Provide clear, accurate and up-to-date information to diagnosed families regarding the disease, therapeutic avenues and current research programs
  • Raise awareness of the disease among the community, including the medical profession
  • Advocate for improved outcomes for the Sanfilippo patient community
  • Improve the diagnosis path through more accurate and earlier diagnosis to enable appropriate treatment

Researchers around the world are working hard to find effective treatments for Sanfilippo. But their work is only made possible with your support.

How challenging is this adventure?

The Mount Kosciuszko trek is ranked 3/5. While no extensive trekking experience is required prior to registering, our adventures are designed for people who are relatively fit and willing to train. The trek is a physical challenge, and the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy the experience.

As part of this adventure, you will trek approximately 20 kilometres along well-worn paths over 6–7 hours.

You will be well supported on the adventure, with the guides and your team all cheering you on. You are free to move at your own pace and we will take frequent breaks.

How do I fundraise?

Never fundraised before? Not sure where to start? No worries, we don’t expect you to do it alone. You will have regular support from the Inspired Adventures fundraising team, who will help you make a fundraising plan to meet your target. Alongside personalised coaching, we will also send you lots of ideas and resources on how to fundraise. From online fundraising to trivia nights, to bake sales and out-of-the-box ideas, we have years and years of tried and tested tips to make your fundraising a success.

Who will I be travelling with?

We believe small group travel is better for the planet, and better for you. Our adventures usually have 10 – 20 people aged from 18 to 90+ (younger ages considered on request). You can be sure that you have all come together with the shared purpose of making a difference to others and having the adventure of a lifetime.

The group will be led by a local tour guide with expert knowledge of the region. Many groups will also be accompanied by an Inspired Adventures team leader or doctor to support and motivate the team.

Where applicable, a charity representative may also join the team. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about your chosen charity and their work.

We understand the dilemma of making travel plans when the world feels unpredictable right now. You can still register for an Inspired Adventure in complete confidence, because we promise to look after you should COVID-19 travel bans affect your plans.

If COVID-19 travel bans mean your Inspired Adventure cannot go ahead as scheduled, we will endeavour to reschedule the departure to a later date to allow you still to travel as planned.
