One of the most rewarding experiences of my life

— James, Larapinta trek 2018

Every day, millions of children around the world are plunged into darkness when the sun goes down. Living in extreme energy poverty, they and their families have little or no access to light. It means kids can’t study after dark, which greatly affects their education outcomes.

By joining the SolarBuddy Adventure For Light you’ll be taking on the Larapinta Trail and raising enough money to supply 100 solar lights to children so they can study after dark.

For 5 extraordinary days, you’ll take part in a walking adventure that explores some of the most spectacular parts of the Australian outback. In fact, some hikers say the 223-kilometre Larapinta Trail, which follows the backbone of the MacDonnell Ranges, is one of the finest multiday walking adventures anywhere in the world. Follow its ridgelines through the Central Desert, and take in the majesty of this exceptional landscape made famous in the paintings of Albert Namatjira.

Are you ready to help SolarBuddy illuminate the darkness and raise awareness of energy poverty around the world?

Imagine night falls and you’re plunged into darkness. That’s the everyday reality for about 789 million people around the world who don’t have access to clean, safe energy. Instead they use charcoal, firewood and kerosene to cook and provide light, all of which are expensive, unsafe and unclean. It affects their health and safety, as well as creating pollution that affects the environment. For children, it means they’re unable to study after sunset, harming their education outcomes. By raising just $3,000 on your Larapinta adventure you’ll be providing the gift of light to 100 children and their families living in extreme energy poverty. You’ll also be helping by raising awareness about this important issue, and bringing SolarBuddy closer to its goal of gifting 6 million solar lights to children by 2030.

How challenging is this adventure?

This adventure is ranked 3/5. While no extensive trekking experience is required prior to registering, our adventures are specifically designed for people who are relatively fit and willing to train. The Larapinta Trail is a physical challenge, and the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy the experience.

You will be well supported on the adventure, with the guides and your team all cheering you on. You are free to move at your own pace and we will take frequent breaks.

How do I fundraise?

Never fundraised before? Not sure where to start? No worries, we don’t expect you to do it alone. You will have regular support from the Inspired Adventures fundraising team, who will help you make a fundraising plan to meet your target. Alongside personalised coaching, we will also send you lots of ideas and resources on how to fundraise. From online fundraising to trivia nights, to bake sales and out-of-the-box ideas, we have years and years of tried and tested tips to make your fundraising a success.

Who will I be travelling with?

We believe small group travel is better for the planet, and better for you. Our adventures usually have 10 – 20 people aged from 18 to 90+ (younger ages considered on request). You can be sure that you have all come together with the shared purpose of making a difference to others and having the adventure of a lifetime.

The group will be led by a local tour guide with expert knowledge of the region. Many groups will also be accompanied by an Inspired Adventures team leader or doctor to support and motivate the team.

Where applicable, a charity representative may also join the team. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about your chosen charity and their work.

We understand the dilemma of making travel plans when the world feels unpredictable right now. You can still register for an Inspired Adventure in complete confidence, because we promise to look after you should COVID-19 travel bans affect your plans.

If COVID-19 travel bans mean your Inspired Adventure cannot go ahead as scheduled, we will endeavour to reschedule the departure to a later date to allow you still to travel as planned.
