The Outback Challenge is a truly life-changing adventure – for you and children who are deaf waiting on the gift of hearing from The Shepherd Centre.

“Join us on an amazing trek through Australia’s Outback where we’ll follow Aboriginal Dreaming tracks. We encourage everyone with an adventurous spirit and philanthropic streak to take up the challenge and raise funds for The Shepherd Centre, all while enjoying the trip of a lifetime.”

– CEO Dr Jim Hungerford, The Shepherd Centre

The Outback Challenge will see a team of passionate supporters of The Shepherd Centre take on part of the legendary Larapinta Trail in Central Australia. The team will trek to raise funds and give hope to children and their families facing a diagnosis of hearing loss. Will you join and help give children the best access to sound and speech?

From ochre-coloured outcroppings to spring-fed gorges and star-lit skies, the Outback is home to some of the most iconic scenery in the world. You’ll experience it all on The Outback Challenge.

All parents want the same thing for their children: every opportunity to live a happy and healthy life.

For Australian children born deaf or with hearing impairment, early intervention is critical in developing language skills so that they may fully participate in the world and reach their full potential. The Shepherd Centre has been providing world-leading early intervention programs since 1970. The vast majority of children graduating from The Shepherd Centre achieve spoken language at the same level as hearing children by the time they are ready for school. These outcomes have earned The Shepherd Centre an international reputation as a centre of excellence in helping children with hearing loss learn to listen and speak.

Most of The Shepherd Centre’s funding comes from supporters just like you. The funds raised on The Outback Challenge will be invested into clinical programs and into research for the development of new programs to ensure that no deaf child goes without help.

• $50 will provide one therapy session teaching a child who is deaf to listen and speak
• $100 will deliver audiology support ensuring hearing devices are fit properly
• $500 will provide travel for a rural family to attend a residential workshop
