With stunning Himalayan views, high passes, traditional teahouses, tiny hamlets, prayer flags and hot springs, the Annapurna region is among the best trekking destinations in the world. And as a participant of Trek for Rights, you will experience it all.
Beginning in Kathmandu, you’ll see how locals are striving every day to rebuild their homes and lives from the devastation of the April 2015 earthquakes. Though confronting, it is an experience you will never forget and will illustrate the importance of the funds you’ve raised for UN Women National Committee Australia. With many areas of the city spared from the devastation, you’ll also discover the history and culture of Nepal’s colourful capital city and some of its many UNESCO World Heritage listed sites.
You’ll then escape the city limits, spending the next six days trekking the Annapurna region through verdant valleys at the foot of spectacular mountains. Over terraced rice fields, across clear mountain rivers and into dense rhododendron forest, you’ll trek narrow paths between some of the highest mountains in the world.
This adventure provides a unique and intimate insight into village life in this beautiful area of the Himalayas, close to the magnificent peaks of the Annapurnas, Machapuchare, and Dhauligiri. Trekking in this pristine and unspoilt area, you will reconnect with an ancient culture long left behind by modern civilisation.
You’ll also have the chance to see the incredible work you’ve made possible by visiting one of UN Women’s programs working to empower women in Nepal.

Despite recent progress, Nepal continues to face many challenges across ethnic, gender and geographic categories. Nepal is ranked 98th in the world on the Gender Inequality Index, largely due to the barriers placed on women’s participation in the economy and in decision-making at all levels.
In Nepal, most women are engaged in traditional, unpaid, and home-based work, with limited opportunity for employment or alternative livelihoods. Many women have had to seek employment opportunities elsewhere in Nepal or abroad, leading to their exposure to sexual exploitation, forced labour and abuse.
UN Women is focused on improving the economic empowerment of excluded women, by enhancing their access to economic opportunities, resources and increasing their leadership roles in local decision-making processes.
Across Nepal, UN Women is supporting more than 2000 women through vocational skills training, business start-up and employment assistance; as well as connecting women with financial institutions to improve their financial literacy and livelihoods. In addition to this, UN Women is building leadership skills for rural and other socially excluded women to increase their representation both in local governance and public policy forums — providing women with a voice, agency and opportunity.
