On this 9-day adventure, you will be pushed both physically and mentally as you trek through five different climatic zones under the care of experienced local guides.

• 443 mothers lose their lives per 100,000 births
• 22 new-born babies die per 1,000 births

As part of UNICEF Australia’s Climb for Kids 2020, you’ll help UNICEF improve access to essential health information, train community health workers and support community awareness activities.

The goal of UNICEF’s health program in Zimbabwe is to improve child survival by ensuring that women and newborn babies have equitable access to high impact, cost effective and quality ante-natal, maternal and newborn health services. This will be achieved through strengthening Village Health Workers’ skills in providing community-based health and health workers’ capacity to provide high quality facility-based services in managing complications before, during and after childbirth.

UNICEF aims to train community health workers from 7,102 villages to improve access to essential health information and provide care with a view to reducing the number of women and newborns who delay seeking care. Village health workers are community-based volunteers who conduct postnatal care visits to ensure newborns and new mothers are health and well, provide important information on maternal, child and family health to communities, screen children for malnutrition, malaria and disability and support families to access timely health care. Health is intrinsically linked with all aspects of a child’s life, influencing their physical and mental growth and development, their access to education and academic attainment, and their ability to engage socially with their peers and their community. Protecting and promoting the health of children is therefore integral to improving the lives of children, their families and their communities.

$375 could ensure 20 newborn babies receive a home visit in the critical first 7 days after birth to check that they and their mother are healthy and well.

$129 could train 10 village health workers. Building the capacity of village health workers is critical to vaccinating children, preventing disease, and managing health services in communities.

$52 could ensure 10 village health workers receive monthly supervision to support them to provide the best quality of care for their communities, identify any challenges they face and solve them

$44 could provide a utility kit for a village health worker. Utility kits contain all the essential supplies a Village Health Worker needs to do their work. They contain uniforms, bicycles, scales, thermometers, timers, scissors, torches, batteries and protective wear.
