Join UNICEF Australia on the Cycle For Children: Laos 2018 challenge, and fill your senses with the sights, sounds and smells of Asia as you cycle through vivid green rice paddies and small villages. Best of all, you will raise funds for UNICEF’s Early Childhood Development (ECD) program to help children in Laos develop to their full potential through quality early childhood care and education.

Over 10 incredible days, you will fill your senses with the sights, sounds and smells of one of Southeast Asia’s most mesmerising destinations.

You’re inspiring journey begins in Vientiane, where you’ll get an insight into the religious, historical and cultural wonders of Laos’ laidback capital. You’ll then head to Pakse, where you’ll be immersed in the communities that UNICEF is working in before you begin your cycle challenge.

Back to Vientiane, where you’ll begin your cycle and ride beyond city limits to Luang Prabang, cycling through vivid green rice paddies and small villages. Nothing short of extraordinary, you will witness magical waterfalls, traditional weaving villages, and sacred caves on your journey, and even spend a memorable night getting to know a local family in a village homestay.

Best of all, with every kilometre you cover you will be raising funds for UNICEF’s Early Childhood Development (ECD) program to help children in Laos develop to their full potential through quality early childhood care and education. Your fundraising efforts will help support and train community facilitators, parents and caregivers and improve water and sanitation conditions for pre-school children.

As part of Cycle For Children: Laos 2018, you will directly help fund UNICEF’s Early Childhood Development (ECD) program to improve child development in Lao PDR through improving access to quality early childhood education, parenting education and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH).

Working in 60 communities across three provinces in Laos: Saravan, Phongsaly, and Savannakhet, this program focuses on children from hard to reach and ethnic minority communities who have particularly low access to quality early childhood education. You will help prepare children for school and equip parents and education facilitators with the tools and capacity to support their holistic development.

To improve access to ECD for these children, the program will:

  • Build capacity among pre-primary teachers through training and in-classroom support.
  • Implement community-based school readiness programs in areas with no existing early childhood education facilities. This is undertaken through training and in-classroom support of community based facilitators and provision of resources.
  • Develop resources and deliver training for trainers, community facilitators, parents and caregivers on a range of key topics, including health, hygiene, child protection, and early learning and child development.
  • Additionally the project seeks to improve water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) conditions in the target pre-primary schools, through the construction of water supplies, latrines and hand washing stations, and hygiene behaviour change packages with teachers and students.
