What inspired you to take on your first Inspired Adventure?

To journey the Kokoda Track has been something I have wanted to do for a long time, I never thought I would ever get a chance to go there, though.

Why did you choose to fundraise for The Salvation Army?

I have been involved with The Salvation Army for around 16 years in various voluntary positions. Through this I have seen first-hand the amazing work that we do, lives being transformed and hope restored, but that being said, the majority of our work could not be done without the amazing support and generosity from the community. I was extremely excited to find out there was an opportunity to journey the Kokoda Track and raise funds for the Salvos.

You are clearly really involved and invested in the art of giving back to the community, what do you think is so exciting about being able to take on an adventure as well as give to a cause you care about?

I think it is great because not only will there be a massive sense of achievement completing the Kokoda Trail but knowing that by doing this, many people will be helped with the funds that are raised. Every day, thousands of people are doing it tough, no home to live in, not sure where their next meal will come from. Knowing that some of these people will be fed, clothed, and accommodated is what excites me. It’s great to see my friends, family and community supporting me in raising funds for The Salvos.

"Knowing that some of these people will be fed, clothed, and accommodated is what excites me."

What are your total funds raised so far? Are there any key fundraising ideas that have been the bulk of your success?

As I write this the total funds I have raised so far is $1,394. Included in this was a sponsorship from Bluechip Roofing which blew me away, it was awesome to receive such great support and encouragement. I am yet to host any fundraising events, but so far social media presence, posting training session stats (maps, time and distance etc.) and photos of my journey on Instagram, Facebook and most importantly the Everyday Hero page has been great in raising awareness and has contributed to friends and family getting on board with their support. I have plans for a paintball fundraising day and a Talent Night in Feb/March 2017.

What have been some of the highlights of your fundraising experience so far?

Biggest highlight would have to be the first training session, ¾ into the walk, we came across a young woman who possibly broke her ankle. With no way for her to get down, we decided to carry her back down. Not the session we had planned for but it was amazing to be able to be there to help out. Ended up meeting a fellow Inspired Adventurer (Amanda) who was training for her trip to the Great Wall.

What have been your biggest challenges in taking on an Inspired Adventure? How did you overcome this?

I am quite a social person so I have found it challenging to do solo training sessions—fortunately, I have some awesome people who have supported me and come along for several hikes. I have found that even going alone, there are people to meet along the way, and everyone is really friendly and encouraging.

Have you noticed any changes or transformation in your life since taking on your first adventure?

I’ve noticed a drop in weight and an increase in fitness level. I’ve also started thinking about doing some more adventurous training sessions like Canyoning which is crazy because I fear heights and water. I think deciding to go on this adventure is helping and will help face some fears that have hindered me living life to the full.

"As soon as you decide to take on such a huge adventure, get out there and start training"

What advice would you offer to other people looking to complete a challenge like this?

JUST DO IT! As soon as you decide to take on such a huge adventure, get out there and start training… Train, train, TRAIN! The sooner you do it, the sooner you’ll start noticing the difference in your energy levels and you’ll feel great, half the journey is preparing for it, if you can build up your stamina, you will enjoy it so much more than if you’re constantly gasping for air. Find a support network who will go on training sessions with you or hold you accountable and give a bit of a boot up the backside when you slack off.

Just want to give a HUGE shout out to Bluechip Roofing Solutions for your sponsorship. Also a BIG thanks to those who have come out on hikes with me, Kirsten, Amanda, Andrew and Tania —your support is greatly appreciated.

What inspired you to take on your first Inspired Adventure?

My friend Jake told me about the challenge after he signed up. Jake has his own foundation that works with young adults and speaking with him about the adventure inspired me to want to take on the challenge and make a difference.

Why did you choose to fundraise for AMF?

I was raised by just my mum and she fostered children who had been displaced from their homes due to domestic violence. This meant I was very aware from a young age the effect domestic violence has on children and how important support is for these children.

You are clearly really involved and invested in the art of giving back to the community, what do you think is so exciting about being able to take on an adventure as well as give to a cause you care about?

You get to have an incredible experience and after all the hard work fundraising you get a reward at the end as well as helping a good cause.

“Don’t be afraid to take the leap, it's hard work but you won’t regret it, it’s addictive!”

What are your total funds raised so far? Are there any key fundraising ideas that have been the bulk of your success?

I have raised so far $2,766. I am still fundraising to get to my target. I am going to ask a friend who plays AFL to sign a jersey to raffle off this should bring me to the $3,500 target.

I’d say following up on people’s offers of donations made a big difference. Once they said they would donate I kept it at the front of their minds by getting in touch with direct asks, don’t be afraid to contact and chase your supporters and hold them to their word.

Another key to getting a high number of donations is using all your networks. My work network were very generous with their donations. Use your community don’t be afraid to ask for help- encourage your supporters to donate by telling them to advertise they are helping you help a cause.

What have been some of the highlights of your fundraising experience so far?

People engaging in the challenge and the cause, getting behind me and following my journey before, during and after the adventure.

What have been your biggest challenges in taking on an Inspired Adventure? How did you overcome this?

Finding time to fundraise and get ready for the trip. I have a really busy work schedule that made it hard to put the time in that was really required to raise the money.

I would definitely recommend setting time aside each week for fundraising activities and admin and making sure you stick to it!

Have you noticed any changes or transformation in your life since taking on your first adventure?

Yes! It’s made me want to give back to good causes much more. I’ve actually been so inspired by my experience that I’m going to try and run my own adventure with Jake and his foundation, OTLR, to make a difference to the young adults the foundation supports. I’ve also learnt a lot about myself from taking on this challenge.

What inspired you to take on your first Inspired Adventure?

I first felt inspired to help make a difference when my sister’s husband, Simon announced he was participating in the MCG “Stadium Stomp” to try and raise money for Crohn’s and Colitis Australia, in honour of my testing journey with Crohn’s Disease. Following his success at the fundraiser, I visited the CCA website, to find out how I could help. I stumbled across the upcoming Inspired Adventure to trek the Great Wall of China, and knew straight away I had to climb that wall. Simon was very supportive and offered to come with me! Thankfully, it wasn’t too late for us to join!

Why did you choose to fundraise for Crohn's & Colitis Australia?

I have suffered with Crohn’s Disease for the past fourteen years of my life. While my condition has caused me much pain, loss and suffering I have recently been able to reach a feeling of acceptance. I understand that my disease will always be my reality, but am very determined to live a fulfilling and fruitful life. I hope to help other sufferers via fundraising so that they may reach their own point of peace and acceptance.

"I received messages from many old friends and even others who I had not yet met, disclosing to me that they too were sufferers and that they wanted to be a part of my adventure"

You are clearly really involved and invested in the art of giving back to the community, what do you think is so exciting about being able to take on an adventure as well as give to a cause you care about?

It is truly a dream come true. I have always had a deep passion for travel, and currently work at a travel agency. Unfortunately I have never felt the confidence to visit Asia, because of my Crohn’s. This Inspired Adventure is allowing me to visit China, in the safety of a group who all understand my concerns and challenges. Not only am I able to develop a new supportive network for myself, but I have also raised a considerate amount for Crohn’s and Colitis Australia. What an incredible opportunity!

ONE MONTH TO GO! China come at us! 👊🏽 #boom

What are your total funds raised so far? Are there any key fundraising ideas that have been the bulk of your success?

Simon and I have currently raised $9,752.73 for Crohn’s and Colitis Australia. As we joined our adventure only three months ago, we approached the fundraising with the idea of hosting one main event, to raise the bulk of our funds. We wanted to think of something fun and light-hearted, that people would be happy to purchase a ticket to attend. We both came to the agreement of hosting a Trivia event complete with raffle, as well as an Online Auction on the side.

We drafted a letter and approached as many local businesses that we could think of requesting a contribution to help make our events a success. I sent letters to or visited businesses that had made a difference to my personal journey with Crohn’s Disease- for instance, following my ileostomy surgery in February, it took a lengthy time for me to feel fit or adventurous again, as I had lost most of my muscle strength.

A few months after surgery, I decided to visit a tree tops obstacle course, in the mountains. Although it was a challenge for me physically, it left me feeling so empowered and physically capable, even with my new ostomy friend on board. When approaching this business, I shared my personal experience with them via the letter, and they were so excited that they had made such a positive impact on my recovery, and were more than happy to donate a voucher. I aimed to personalise each letter sent. You have to expect that not all businesses will be able to help, or even offer a reply, but I found most were very generous. Perhaps this was because Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are not often talked about, regardless of the fact that many of those who had opened our letters were bound to have personally known or known of a sufferer.

After two months, we had received donations from 71 businesses. We split the donations into Online Auction items and raffle prizes for the Trivia Night. In the meantime, we created a Facebook page to promote our events, and encouraged the purchase of Trivia tickets. The events were hard work, but we managed to gain incredible interest and 203 people attended our trivia night! We are still yet to tally our income from this event.

The key to success is vital support from local businesses, as well as support and help from close family and friends to coordinate the events. I was fortunate to have my sister by my side, who is very passionate about my cause. She has always been there for me through my tests and triumphs with Crohn’s, and it was important to her to help Simon and I get across the line. As a primary school teacher, her organisational skills helped us to plan and run the events smoothly. I owe a lot of my success to her.

What have been some of the highlights of your fundraising experience so far?

The highlight of my fundraising experience was learning that I had the confidence to finally let the world know that I was a sufferer of Crohn’s Disease! I had always been very private and almost ashamed of the burden my disease had bestowed upon my life. My journey with Inspired Adventures has given me the strength to proudly say, “Yes, I do have Crohn’s Disease, but this in no way defines me, and has only caused me to be a stronger person”. Upon becoming public with my ordeal, I received messages from many old friends and even others who I had not yet met, disclosing to me that they too were sufferers and that they wanted to be a part of my adventure. One is organising a movie night fundraiser for me in a couple of weeks. We have since created a small support group between us, where we are able to meet and talk about our lives in a way that only Crohnie’s would understand! Without my Inspired experience, I would never have known that these girls shared my burden, and we would all still be suffering in silence with little support.

What have been your biggest challenges in taking on an Inspired Adventure? How did you overcome this?

As I live with my disease, I must be careful to maintain a healthy balance between work life and resting adequately, so that I ensure I don’t slip into a flare up. I find I am most vulnerable to flare ups when I am stressed, and I must admit this has been a challenge throughout my fundraising adventure. As Simon and I had only joined our group a few months prior to take off, we needed to begin our fundraising quickly and effectively. There were many days that saw me at work, and then coming home to spend long hours in front of the computer, sending emails and writing letters to businesses. The Online Auction was also very hard on my body mentally, as I tried to keep track of who had bid on, paid and collected their items. Thankfully Simon has been able to take on most of the budgeting work load. My sister was also very much in tune with my schedule, and encouraged me to take time to rest, eat well and sleep. I definitely did slip into a number of flare ups along the way, however this is all part of managing a life with Crohn’s Disease, and it is something that I am only too familiar with.

"This challenge has reflected so much positivity and joy onto my life, and I will always be grateful for the opportunity"

Have you noticed any changes or transformation in your life since taking on your first adventure?

Absolutely. My adventure has provided me with a sense of purpose and fulfilment. Never have I felt so productive and worthy. I have constantly been telling others along the way, ‘the feeling I have right now is such a rush! Organising a fundraiser for a worthy cause should be something on everybody’s bucket list!’ I am almost afraid that I might feel a little lost after my adventure is over, but I know I will be kept busy spending time with my new support group and friends that I have made along the way! My Inspired Adventure has honestly enabled me to feel like an “Everyday Hero”. It has reflected so much positivity and joy onto my life, and I will always be grateful for the opportunity. The awareness I have raised for Crohn’s and Colitis is also invaluable.

What advice would you offer to other people looking to complete a challenge like this?

Surround yourself with positive, supportive friends and family who want to help and are as passionate about your cause as you are! Don’t try to do it alone, the more support and love you attract, the more fulfilling the experience can be. I feel that my journey has so far been perfected by the people I have worked with and met along the way! I have made lifelong friends already by putting myself out there, and I have not even met my fellow Adventurers yet! I have found that many people want to feel that they can be a part of something “good”, but aren’t sure how to coordinate a fundraiser on their own from scratch. Because of this, they are more than happy to help you get to your target, so that they themselves can feel uplifted, helpful and supportive of something so worthy.

What inspired you to take on your first Inspired Adventure?

I was on Facebook and saw that Crohn’s & Colitis Australia had announced the China Challenge and were looking for participants. At first I dismissed it, thinking ‘well I could never do anything like that’ but it kept playing on my mind.

I went back and re-read it and thought, actually what is stopping me? Nothing! It came along at a time in my life when I needed a focus and a challenge. After fighting the physical battle with Crohn’s for so many years I was finally feeling better physically but feelings of depression were taking over. This was the perfect distraction and focus that I needed. And to quote Legally Blonde “Exercise gives you endorphins; endorphins make you happy”.

Why did you choose to fundraise for Crohn's & Colitis Australia?

I have Crohn’s Disease, I was diagnosed about 11 years ago and this disease has changed my life. I must say, not all for the worse. It has changed me as a person, made me stronger, more appreciative, and grateful for the small things in life, not to mention life itself.

You are clearly really involved and invested in the art of giving back to the community, what do you think is so exciting about being able to take on an adventure as well as give to a cause you care about?

I am excited and a little scared about the adventure. For me, the ability to fundraise and give some awareness to a disease that I feel has little to no awareness means a lot. Having IBD myself and seeing how cruel this disease can be makes me so passionate about getting the message out there to others.

If I had not been so embarrassed of my symptoms and sought help sooner then maybe I would still have a bowel. The ‘toilet’ stigma has to stop; Crohn’s and Colitis are so much more than just bowel diseases. The fact that Crohn’s and Colitis affects 1 in 250 Australians and rising is astounding that it gets such little support and awareness.

"Just feeling I am helping others is reward enough"

What are your total funds raised so far? Are there any key fundraising ideas that have been the bulk of your success?

To date I have raised over $4,000 on my Everyday Hero page, and I managed to raise $4,200 through Cow Poo Bingo! What’s this you may ask?

Well, although Crohn’s and Colitis are much more than toilet related, it seemed pretty appropriate for a bowel disease fundraiser! So you get some temporary fencing, line mark a field and borrow a calf or two! You sell squares at $10 each and give the winner $500 – basically the square that the cow poo’s in first on the day is the winner.

We were a little nervous, as my calf seemed to have some performance anxiety. However, to the crowd’s applause she eventually decided to relieve herself. I also had a jumping castle, games for the kids, face painting, a mechanical bull ride, live music, ongoing raffles all afternoon. Approximately 200 people would have been there on the day. It was exhausting but a complete success.

My next fundraiser will be an online auction. My sister is a well-known artist and she has kindly offered to donate a painting (minimum bid $1,000) to paint a customised painting for the winner.

Tracey Murrin Crohn's Colitis

What have been some of the highlights of your fundraising experience so far?

Educating others and raising awareness, I enjoy that aspect and really it almost feels selfish to say it but it is in my nature to help others so this feels good. Cow Poo Bingo day was exhausting, but when it all came together and the day was so brilliant, I would have to say it was my highlight for sure. Just the feeling that I am helping others with my illness is reward enough.

What have been your biggest challenges in taking on an Inspired Adventure? How did you overcome this?

My biggest challenges have been time for one, having Crohn’s myself I get rather tired and I also work full time, so it’s hard to make the extra time to work on the training and fundraising.

The biggest challenge has been getting my fitness up to par. For those who don’t know, Crohn’s is completely unpredictable and in my case I also have arthritis due to Crohn’s and am susceptible to infections. I have just had to keep chipping away at the training and my dog loves the extra walks. The biggest trigger for my disease is stress, so I have tried at all times to stay calm.

Running for Crohn's & Colitis

Have you noticed any changes or transformation in your life since taking on your first adventure?

Absolutely, other than physical fitness. I am enjoying the outdoors more than I have in years. But I have become much more confident in talking to people about bowel disease and excited about making a difference.

"Set realistic goals, if you are competing a challenge and also have health issues, know your limitations"

What advice would you offer to other people looking to complete a challenge like this?

Make sure you manage your time well. Give yourself plenty of time to organise events and have a back-up plan. My Cow Poo Bingo day was rescheduled due to rain, but still worked out well. Set realistic goals. And if you are completing a challenge and also have health issues, know your limitations.

It is also a good idea to ask a friend or family member to help keep you motivated with your training, it is always nicer to go walking with someone else than on your own. And they can give you a little ‘push’ when you slacken off!

What inspired you to take on your first Inspired Adventure?

A few years ago I was strolling around the streets of Manhattan and stumbled across the NYC Marathon. As I watched the band of people striding past me sweating it out with such determination to reach the finish line, I immediately knew that I too wanted to be running along side them.

Why did you choose to fundraise for Beyond Blue?

I believe that mental health is one of the most predominant health issues of this generation, and often it’s the most misunderstood. It is so important for people like me to support Beyond Blue so they can continue to raise awareness and support those affected by mental illness.

"I have been so overwhelmed by the support of everyone in my life and how quickly I have been able to raise the funds."

You are clearly really involved and invested in the art of giving back to the community, what do you think is so exciting about being able to take on an adventure as well as give to a cause you care about?

Running a marathon is an adventure in itself but running for Beyond Blue in the NYC Marathon will make the adventure that much sweeter.

What are your total funds raised so far? Are there any key fundraising ideas that have been the bulk of your success?

I have now raised over the $6,000 mark, which would never have been possible with out the phenomenal support of friends, family, colleagues and local WA businesses. I have yet to initiate any specific fundraising events but I have been taking advantage of the world of social media by sharing my page and training progress with everyone.

What have been some of the highlights of your fundraising experience so far?

There is nothing more exciting than receiving that email that says you have received a donation. I have been so overwhelmed by the support of everyone in my life and how quickly I have been able to raise the funds.

What have been your biggest challenges in taking on an Inspired Adventure? How did you overcome this?

I start work pretty early, so for me the biggest challenge has been facing the early cold winter mornings to train. My motivation to get up is the realisation that Perth winter is most likely warmer than it will be in NYC for the marathon in November.

"If you don’t just do it, you never will"

Have you noticed any changes or transformation in your life since taking on your first adventure?

I have definitely been feeling physical pain in areas that I have not felt before, but in all seriousness this adventure has made me more efficient with my time and life generally.

What advice would you offer to other people looking to complete a challenge like this?

Just do it! It took my couple of years to get around to it but if you don’t just do it, you never will.

What inspired you to take on your first Inspired Adventure?

I was inspired to take on my first Inspired Adventure challenge because at the reasonably young age of 40 in October 2015, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. For about 5 months life was all about cancer, tests, treatment and then recovery. I was fortunate that I didn’t have to have chemotherapy, but ongoing hormone treatment provides its own challenges. Through all of this, I tried to remain positive but was looking for a way to make some sense of the horrid disease cancer is.  I got an email from the BCNA about their Tuscany and I finally felt like I had the chance to turn the negative situation into something positive.  I could fundraise for such an important cause, raise awareness for early detection, give for the benefit of others, and drive myself to regain my fitness all at once. I had my light bulb moment.

How are you feeling about your upcoming adventure?

Participating in the trek is something completely outside of my comfort zone. It scares and excites me at the same time.  I haven’t travelled much but have always wanted to see more of the world, but to do it with a group of strangers is not something I’d normally do. I don’t worry about being physically fit; it’s the rest of the unknowns that scares me.

What are your total funds raised so far?

So far, I’ve raised around $1,400, which would not have been possible without the generosity of my parents, sister, grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins and some beautiful friends.

"Participating in the trek is something completely outside of my comfort zone. It scares and excites me at the same time."

What have been your biggest challenges in taking on an Inspired Adventure? How did you overcome this?

I’ve always been a fiercely independent person (just ask my mum), and got through every doctor’s appointment, looking after my house, working full time on my own (except one week my mum stayed with me after my breast surgery). Asking people to donate, come to events and to help out has been one of the hardest things for me to do. I don’t think I’ll ever be good at it!

Also, some of my fundraising plans had to be reconsidered, and now I am coming up with alternatives as the movie afternoon I’d planned didn’t sell as many tickets as I’d hoped, and corporate donations for a trivia night have been hard to obtain. I’m a hugely passionate baker, so morning teas through my various work locations will also play a part in raising funds, which is a double bonus cause I get to do something I enjoy, feed people I care about, all while doing something positive.

What advice would you offer to other people looking to complete a challenge like this?

As hard as some parts of this have been, I’d encourage anyone looking to spread positivity and do good for others to get involved with an Inspired Adventure. Not only will you create awareness, but you will also learn about yourself too … isn’t that what this whole journey of life is about?

What inspired you to take on your first Inspired Adventure?

Actually it was very spur of the moment! I am on Plan’s mailing list and received an email from Plan International about the Cambodia challenge that really grabbed me – it just seemed to be the right thing at the right time! I wasn’t sure that we could manage it as a family as my husband is away from home with work often, but when I mentioned it to him he immediately said, “Do it! We can work everything out” … so here I am.

Why did you choose to fundraise for Plan International?

Since the email I received from Plan really grabbed me, I went on to read more about the #becauseIamagirl campaign. The story of how the campaign was started by Marianne Raven hit home and made me think about how lucky I was to be born into a society where I had rights, the opportunity to be educated and make a good life for myself and my family. I want my kids to understand that they too are lucky and that there is much we can do to facilitate change and make the world a better place. It only takes 1 small act to start making a difference.

You are clearly really involved and invested in the art of giving back to the community, what do you think is so exciting about being able to take on an adventure as well as give to a cause you care about?

The whole experience is exciting. I have an amazing challenge on the horizon where I will be cycling 350kms through a country I have never visited, and visiting a Plan International project on International Day of the Girl. But this is only part of the story. I am gaining personal confidence, setting goals, learning new skills, getting fit, bringing together my friends and family and all in aid of #BecauseIamaGirl… we are going to make a difference somewhere that needs it most, and what makes it super special is that I am a girl doing it for other girls.

"I am gaining personal confidence, setting goals, learning new skills, getting fit, bringing together my friends and family and all in aid of #BecauseIamaGirl"

What are your total funds raised so far? Are there any key fundraising ideas that have been the bulk of your success?

The fundraising was the scariest part of the challenge for me – I am exceptionally self-sufficient and don’t like to ask anyone for anything… but I have surprised myself. So far I have raised almost $2,000, mainly through donations and small fundraising ideas. I have decided to achieve my goals through lots of small events through the year – a little soon mounts up. This suits the way I work and think. I believe it is important to raise money in ways that suit your personality and personal network so that it is a fun, rewarding and of course successful experience without the stress.

What have been some of the highlights of your fundraising experience so far?

I am an artist and am using my art as a focal point for my fundraising. Last month I released the first series of my “HeArts of Hope” – hand painted wooden hearts, each one uniquely designed, with all profit being donated to my fundraising campaign. They sold out within the week and I already have a waiting list for series 2 which will be released shortly. I will also be donating 75% of the purchase price from 2 of my latest abstract paintings, “Feeling Flowery” and “Babbling Brook”, to the campaign. At the end of May I will also be attending a car boot (and trailer!) sale, selling lots of items that my friends are donating. I’ve used Facebook a lot to advertise what I’m doing to my friends and their response has been amazing. I have a house full of things already, a borrowed trailer and friends volunteering to help on the day. I am very excited to see how we go and feel blessed to have such wonderful friends!

What have been your biggest challenges in taking on an Inspired Adventure? How did you overcome this?

My biggest challenge is by far the fundraising, but I’m finding that little events along the way and the constant talking to people to raise the profile of what I am doing seems to be working. I’ve also started sharing my experiences on Instagram and am loving the motivational comments that people leave.

Have you noticed any changes or transformation in your life since taking on your first adventure?

I am doing something really meaningful and important, so I feel really great about myself.  Understanding more of the background of the campaign has also put life into perspective in many ways. Here in Australia we take a lot for granted. My family is my support team and having them involved every step of the way is also helping them to learn what is important in life. By the time my #cycleforgirls comes around I will also be fit as a fiddle… that change is still in progress!

"It only takes one small act to start making a difference."

What advice would you offer to other people looking to complete a challenge like this?

Go for it! There is a way to get around all the hurdles. Initially the challenge might seem like an elephant sized task, but breaking it down into bite-sized pieces will ensure that you achieve your goals. Getting your family on board with the excitement is important, mine are my ever loving support crew, my children (and husband!) are proud of me and tell everyone that will listen what we are doing.

What inspired you to take on your Inspired Adventure for the Leukaemia Foundation?

I love a challenge and I have never been overseas. I stumbled across the Inspired Adventures website and when I saw the Machu Picchu trek for the Leukaemia Foundation, I didn’t need to put any more thought into it. I booked it instantly. When my brother Josh was 5 years old, he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. We are very close, born just 12 months apart. Josh spent a year at Westmead Children’s Hospital where he underwent a bone marrow transplant and chemotherapy. My mum didn’t have much money and relied heavily on support services such as transport, financial assistance, accommodation, education and emotional support. Being a cause so close to my heart, I love any opportunity to fundraise for the Leukaemia Foundation. Josh is now 26 years old and fortunately, very healthy. He’s especially excited for the adventure I’m about to take!

How are you feeling about the challenge ahead?

I’m excited! I am eager to meet my team who seem to be such like-minded and inspiring people. I’m a little bit nervous about the difficulty of the trek but I’m sure it will be a great experience and I can’t wait to take on one of the most beautiful treks in the world!

What have been some of your more successful fundraising ideas so far?

Having a fundraiser BBQ at Bunnings would be the most successful event I have held so far. It was great to get out in the community and talk to people about the foundation and why I’m raising money. I had such a supportive team of family, close friends, and even some acquaintances who turned out to be more generous than I could have ever imagined!

"Seeing how helpful and generous people can be would have to be the ultimate highlight."

What have been some of the highlights of your fundraising experience so far?

Just seeing how helpful and generous people can be would have to be the ultimate highlight. Getting a donation from someone who you least expect really warms the heart. Meeting people while fundraising and hearing stories about their experiences with leukaemia, whether it is their own, a friend or family member, it makes me feel so determined and motivated to do all that I can for the foundation.

What have been your biggest challenges in taking on an Inspired Adventure? How did you overcome this?

I joined the Machu Picchu group in December and so I haven’t had long to get organised. My biggest challenge has been the financial struggle that comes with any overseas trip. I just stay focused on what’s ahead and how much this cause means to me. I have been working hard to get myself to Peru and it’s not hard to remind myself why I’m doing this.

Have you noticed any changes or transformation in your life since taking on your first adventure?

My priorities have changed. I am so driven and determined to be a better person and challenge myself more.

What are you most looking forward to about your upcoming adventure to Peru?

I’m most looking forward to meeting the rest of the Inca trekkers, experiencing the Peruvian culture and of course, getting to Machu Picchu!

"My priorities have changed. I am so driven and determined to be a better person and challenge myself more."

What advice would you offer to other people looking to complete a challenge like this?

It will be the best thing you’ve ever done. Work hard and don’t give up. Don’t be afraid to ask for help along the way, and have fun!

What inspired you to take on your first Inspired Adventure for Interplast?

I am very fortunate to have been selected by my work, Johnson & Johnson Medical, to work as an ambassador for Interplast Australia and New Zealand. It is amazing to work for a company that helps support organisations such as Interplast and this led to me Turia’s Kokoda Trek. I absolutely love travelling and adventure, so the opportunity to do this while helping out a worthwhile charity is fantastic. Being able to do this as part of my job is the opportunity of a lifetime.

How are you feeling about the challenge ahead?

Nervous! I expect the Kokoda Track to be very challenging. I am training very hard and I am so grateful to have met some wonderful people along the way.

What have been some of your more successful fundraising ideas so far?

I have some very generous family, friends and colleagues who have been the main contributors to my success (thank you, if you’re reading this). I am currently running a raffle, planning a bake-off for April and running a guessing game in our staff café.  I have been absolutely blown away by the response.

"Just do it. Commit first – ask questions later!"

What have been some of the highlights of your fundraising experience so far?

Witnessing firsthand the generosity of businesses, family and friends and those that are motivated to help when they hear about the great work Interplast ANZ do throughout Asia-Pacific.

What have been your biggest challenges in taking on an Inspired Adventure? How did you overcome this?

I am really nervous about being out of contact with my husband while trekking! I’m not sure I’ve overcome this yet, but I’m sure the adventure will help make this a little easier.

Have you noticed any changes or transformations in your life since taking on your first adventure?

I feel a real sense of achievement in raising funds for Interplast. My training for the trek is helping my fitness as well, so I’m feeling great all round.

What are you most looking forward to about your upcoming adventure to Kokoda?

I live to travel. I am so excited to see new places, meet new people, and make a real difference to those Interplast helps throughout Asia-Pacific.

What advice would you offer to other people looking to complete a challenge like this?

Just do it. Commit first – ask questions later!

What inspired you to take on your first Inspired Adventure for the Leukaemia Foundation?

I love volunteering so there are many things that have motivated me to take on my first Inspired Adventure, but the biggest would be to fundraise for a fantastic foundation and give back to people that really need support. I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia at the age of 7 and received 3 years of chemotherapy at Princess Margaret Hospital in Perth. As a family unit we were luckily enough to be supported by many foundations and not-for-profits such as the Leukaemia Foundation and Ronald McDonald House. I have completed Shave for a Cure several times but I love the idea of raising money for the foundation that also combines setting myself rewarding goals. Training for Machu Picchu is a great challenge that is incredibly empowering, especially post chemotherapy.

How are you feeling about the challenge ahead?

A combination of nervous excitement and overly enthusiastic motivation!  I have quite high standards for myself and combining full time work, with part time university, a training schedule and fundraising has already provided some tricky situations and the need for proactive management. I have already learnt a lot about myself and we are still a few months out from the trek! I am looking forward to pushing my own expectations of what I think my body is capable of doing.  Keeping in touch with other trekkers through social media is such a great way of motivating yourself and keeping that enthusiasm going. I have wanted to explore South America for years so I cannot wait to immerse myself in local culture.

What have been some of your more successful fundraising ideas so far?

I’ve found most of my support has come through social media. You do run the risk of spamming family and friends, however if you switch it up with interesting pictures or funny memes it engages people from another level rather than them just scrolling past ‘another fundraising post’. My recent idea has just become a reality! I have managed to have some Machu Picchu sports singlets designed as a fundraiser for family, friends and trekkers. I used the design and slogan brainstorming as way to engage people on Facebook and Instagram.  The sponsors for the singlets; Fremantle Indoor Beach Volleyball, Blend Pizza & Café, Range to Reef Environmental, Two of Three Design and Fremantle Health Food Store have enabled me to have the design and production done without spending out of my own pocket, which means all the money from the singlets will be able to be donated to the Leukaemia Foundation! I also created some bright and colourful flyers about my story to go with collection tins into staff rooms, cafes and offices. I’ve found that making the trek and cause relevant to the local community makes it more personal and engaging.

"Work out what your motivation is and be very clear on your goal and what your own expectations are for yourself."

What have been some of the highlights of your fundraising experience so far?

I have thoroughly enjoyed the hiking whenever possible (and so has my dog!). The most fantastic feeling is the local community and the support they have offered.  I have barely had to ask for help, which is probably the hardest and most uncomfortable part about fundraising. The horrible truth is nearly everyone knows someone effected by blood cancers and not everyone is lucky enough to have an outcome like mine.  If we can make a better brighter future for those that will be diagnosed, whether it be their treatment or even the level of care and support services, then it’s well worth the effort.

What have been your biggest challenges in taking on an Inspired Adventure? How did you overcome this?

As I mentioned before my time management is fairly average! Making a schedule and combining catching up with friends with hikes or beach walks has been fantastic. I also find asking for help and especially for donations incredibly difficult. I know how many charities are out there and how bad our local job market is here in Perth – which is one of the reasons I wanted to make a singlet. That way there is something tangible and functional that people are making a donation for.

Have you noticed any changes or transformation in your life since taking on your first adventure?

Health and fitness were already a big priority but it has now become more of a daily focus in achieving the goals I set myself. I have become more engaged with the local community and made some great relationships with local businesses. I have also discovered I can do a lot more than I thought was ever possible!

"I have already learnt a lot about myself and we are still a few months out from the trek! I am looking forward to pushing my own expectations of what I think my body is capable of doing."

What are you most looking forward to about your upcoming adventure to Peru?

The culture! I plan on learning some basic Spanish (maybe if we add another day into the week?) and love meeting people and learning about their story. It gives you an opportunity to see the place you are in immersed in from another perspective. Peru has such an incredible history so it will be fantastic to be there and experience it all. Lastly, I am really looking forward to meeting the other amazing trekkers from around Australia. We all seem to have unique experiences but have the same goals and motivations, which I imagine shall make for a memorable and very special trip!

What advice would you offer to other people looking to complete a challenge like this?

My advice would be to talk about it with family and friends before committing, make sure you have the time and money available. Fundraising whilst also trying to save money doesn’t make the experience as fun as it should be!  My other suggestion would be to work out what your motivation is – be very clear on your goal and what your own expectations are for yourself.  Make sure you share the workload and even though it is uncomfortable – ask people for help! Trust me, you will be very surprised with the number of people that genuinely want to help you achieve your goal!
