Jane Delahay’s “The Leap Year”
A breast cancer story

“You have breast cancer” No one ever wants to hear those words, but on 22 February 2016, I was told this devastating news and it changed my life”Jane Delahay

Jane's story

I first spoke to Jane in September 2016, six months after her breast cancer diagnosis. She had contacted Inspired Adventures following the launch of Breast Cancer Network Australia’s Tuscany trek and I could instantly tell that Jane was an incredibly special woman, whose kindness and warmth was unmistakable.

I couldn’t wait for Jane to begin her Inspired Adventures journey (although I know she hates the word ‘journey’!) and over the next 8 months I got to know Jane more and more in the lead up to her adventure, which saw her trek across the Tuscan countryside for 8 days alongside 19 other woman who had all dedicated 2016 to raising money to support all Australians with breast cancer. In total, the team raised over $100,000, with Jane raising close to $7,000.

Following BCNA’s trek, Jane felt inspired to fulfil her dream of becoming an author, and has now written a book about twenty women trekking in the Tuscan countryside. Jane’s book ‘The Leap Year’ was published just before Christmas.

The Leap Year is a beautiful, inspiring and humorous read about Jane’s rollercoaster of a year. Jane offers a rare insight into breast cancer diagnosis and the full range of emotions that go with it. Although each person’s experience is unique, Jane has done an outstanding job of providing insight into the experience that so many Australians face following the words ‘You have breast cancer’

Jane refused to let her diagnosis stop her and she instead used it as a catalyst to take on new experiences. As Jane explains  “This story is about how my life changed in an instant, how I finally found what I was supposed to do. Breast Cancer had given me a chance to start again and I had to decide what I wanted from my life.”

Inspired Adventures is so proud of Jane for following her dreams and being such an inspiration for everyone in the office. If you’re looking for your next read, please don’t go past The Leap Year. The Leap Year can be ordered online by visiting Jane’s website. It is also available Kindle.

Fundraiser of the Month – Debbie Carey

Debbie Carey

Cause: BCNA
Adventure: Great Aussie Outback Trek

As our Fundraiser of the Month, Debbie has scored herself a $50 donation to her fundraising page. To be our next month’s winner, make sure you’re uploading your journey to social and use the hashtag #IveBeenInspired.

What inspired you to take on your first Inspired Adventure?

I really wanted to take myself out of my comfort zone – both physically after my treatment, and from a fundraising perspective as I have never done anything like this before.

Why did you choose to fundraise for BCNA?

As a breast cancer survivor myself (2 years), and having lost my mum in 1986, and my cousin being recently diagnosed this was a no-brainer for me. I was passionate about giving something back for all the support I received.

What do you think is so exciting about being able to take on an adventure as well as give to a cause you care about?

Omg! Life is for living and not for standing still. I want to see as much of this beautiful country as I can and live for the moment. What better way than from the top of Mt Sonder?

What are your total funds raised so far? Are there any key fundraising ideas that have been the bulk of your success?

So far I have raised $7,756. I have held a ladies swap shop, an English Cream Tea & scones afternoon (after blagging free scones from Bakers Delight), various auctions and raffles, a kitchen car boot at work. The key has been blagging as many free things as possible and for me… using my outgoing husband to drum up sales of tickets etc. haha!

What have been some of the highlights of your fundraising experience so far?

Lots of wine and laugher! Haha! No seriously, I think drawing attention to this fantastic cause and really pushing myself out there. Something I am really not comfortable with.

What have been your biggest challenges in taking on an Inspired Adventure? How did you overcome this?

Getting as fit as I can with the various ailments that are popping up as a result of my treatment (ie osteoarthritis) and managing the pain as best as I could. I think having a positive mental attitude and approach to this has helped me.

Have you noticed any changes or transformation in your life since taking on your first adventure?

Absolutely! The field of women showed me that it’s ok to be vulnerable. I have remained strong for everyone around me from day 1 and I now accept that it’s ok to ask for help.

"I met some fantastic, strong and brave women on this trip who have shown me that I am part of a much wider sisterhood than I could have ever imagined."

What advice would you offer to other people looking to complete a challenge like this?

Go into this with an open mind, a positive outlook and get ready to appreciate absolutely everything that you see, feel (yes… even the spinifex!), hear and smell. Soak up absolutely everything and grow with the experience.

One of my most memorable moments was waking up to the smell of a campfire, and pulling the swag off my face to the soft sounds of the ‘I am Australian’ song playing from our bus whilst looking up at the awe-inspiring starlit sky.

I met some fantastic, strong and brave women on this trip who have shown me that I am part of a much wider sisterhood than I could have ever imagined.

What inspired you to take on your first Inspired Adventure?

As a busy mum, wife, employee and business owner, I had forgotten what it was that made me, me! I felt a little lost with who I was, and when I saw a post on facebook about this trek, I immediately knew this was something I had to do. It is an added bonus that I am able to go on an amazing, once in a lifetime adventure and raise money for an amazing charity at the same time. Win/win situation!

What are your total funds raised so far? Are there any key fundraising ideas that have been the bulk of your success?

I have raised $4,782 so far. I have been approaching local businesses and asking them to come on board as sponsors and in return I am advertising their business on my personal and trekking facebook pages, in our local newspaper and on my fundraising page. I am also getting a shirt made up with all my sponsors on it to wear during training and the trek.

What have been some of the highlights of your fundraising experience so far?

Myself and fellow trekker, Heidi Jones, organised a 27km walk from Heidi’s hometown to mine as part of a training exercise. When family and friends heard about this, they decided they wanted to walk with us. We ended up with approximately 30 walkers on the day (even though it rained all day), and together we raised just over $1,000 for BCNA.

What have been your biggest challenges in taking on an Inspired Adventure? How did you overcome this?

The two biggest challenges for me are improving my fitness and overcoming that voice in my head that says I can’t do it. I have not overcome this completely, but I am working towards it by training often and when I do I push myself outside of my comfort zone, and keep going even when I want to quit.

Have you noticed any changes or transformation in your life since taking on your first adventure?

I am completely obsessed with this adventure. I am constantly thinking about raising money or training and I feel that my life is being consumed by this, and I love it!

What advice would you offer to other people looking to complete a challenge like this?

Ensure you give yourself enough time before the challenge to prepare yourself physically and mentally if you are not naturally an adventurer. I am so glad I have another 10 months to work on myself before my adventure. Make sure you have a good support crew, my friends and family have been amazing, but I have to say a special thankyou to my husband Shannon and my children Bradley and Abbie because they support me 100%.

breast cancer awareness month check

The importance of checking your breasts this month

There’s no better time to start talking about your breasts, than the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and while you may be aware of breast cancer, this month is really about taking active steps to detect cancer in its earliest stages. Breast cancer affects women (and men!) of all ages, including those under the age of 30. Being breast aware is important for all men and women, and regular self-examination should be part of your health routine to spot any changes in your breasts.

The importance of early detection

The earlier cancer is detected, the better the chances for treatment and survival. Self-examination is an easy way to understand your body and know when something might not be quite right. However, self-examination is not a replacement for a doctor’s visit or mammogram and should not be relied upon as a diagnosis. It is a way for you to be aware of changes in your body.

The breast self-exam

Self-examination involves taking the time to understand what is normal for your body. Not every cancer can be found this way, but it is nonetheless important. Breasts come in all shapes and sizes, so what’s “normal” for one person, may not be for someone else. Only you know what is “normal” for you. The best way to learn is to take some time to get to know your body!

According to McGrath’s app Curve Lurve, the most important steps in a breast self-exam are:

Look – examine the shape and appearance of your breasts and nipples in the mirror with your hands by your sides. Raise your arms above your head and have another look.

Lurve – Love your pair! Feel all of your breasts and nipples looking for anything that isn’t normal for you. Feel from your collarbone to below the bra-line and under your armpit too.

Learn – Learn what is normal for you. Breasts come in all different shapes and sizes, so get to know your normal. See your doctor if you notice any changes.

The app sets a reminder in your calendar to check your breasts each month.

Quick facts:

  • Breasts are mostly made up of fatty tissue, this tissue is supported by ligaments and the large chest muscle that extends over the ribs
  • Hormones regulate a woman’s cycle and are the reason you may notice changes in your breasts before your period
  • Before your period, your breasts might feel fuller and heavier. They may also be tender or lumpy, this lumpiness may gradually fade although some women have tender lumpy breasts all the time.
  • Everyone’s different! Normal comes in all shapes and sizes.

Inspired Adventures helps to raise money for several breast cancer charities including National Breast Cancer Foundation, New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation, Breast Cancer Network Australia and McGrath Foundation to continue to provide care and support, vital medical research as well as raise awareness about early detection.

What inspired you to take on your Inspired Adventure with BCNA?

My mum inspired me to take on this challenge. 12 months ago she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I watched the strongest women I know crumble. Whilst mum crumbled BCNA wrapped their caring and supportive hands around her and helped her get through one of her toughest life journeys. I want to help BCNA help other women the way they helped my mum.

How are you feeling about the challenge ahead? Have you ever been to Central Australia before?

I am excited! I enjoy being physically active and have a great love for the outdoors! I haven’t been to Central Australia before so I am really looking forward to it!

What have been some of the highlights of your fundraising experience so far?

We are in the early stages of fundraising, however it has been a blast working with my parents (who are walking with me) to organise some great events in the community.

What have been your biggest challenges in taking on an Inspired Adventure? How did you overcome this?

One of the biggest challenges I am facing is being confident in approaching people and telling our story! I have found that by being able to share my training journey on social media platforms I have been able to build the confidence I require to speak about it openly with people.

Have you noticed any changes or transformation in your life since taking on your first adventure?

Since taking on this adventure I have gained a great drive and passion to reach my goals.

What are you most looking forward to about your upcoming adventure?

Get out there and do it! This is my first time doing a challenge like this and I have found the team at Inspired Adventures to be of great support!

What inspired you to take on your first Inspired Adventure?

I was inspired to take on my first Inspired Adventure challenge because at the reasonably young age of 40 in October 2015, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. For about 5 months life was all about cancer, tests, treatment and then recovery. I was fortunate that I didn’t have to have chemotherapy, but ongoing hormone treatment provides its own challenges. Through all of this, I tried to remain positive but was looking for a way to make some sense of the horrid disease cancer is.  I got an email from the BCNA about their Tuscany and I finally felt like I had the chance to turn the negative situation into something positive.  I could fundraise for such an important cause, raise awareness for early detection, give for the benefit of others, and drive myself to regain my fitness all at once. I had my light bulb moment.

How are you feeling about your upcoming adventure?

Participating in the trek is something completely outside of my comfort zone. It scares and excites me at the same time.  I haven’t travelled much but have always wanted to see more of the world, but to do it with a group of strangers is not something I’d normally do. I don’t worry about being physically fit; it’s the rest of the unknowns that scares me.

What are your total funds raised so far?

So far, I’ve raised around $1,400, which would not have been possible without the generosity of my parents, sister, grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins and some beautiful friends.

"Participating in the trek is something completely outside of my comfort zone. It scares and excites me at the same time."

What have been your biggest challenges in taking on an Inspired Adventure? How did you overcome this?

I’ve always been a fiercely independent person (just ask my mum), and got through every doctor’s appointment, looking after my house, working full time on my own (except one week my mum stayed with me after my breast surgery). Asking people to donate, come to events and to help out has been one of the hardest things for me to do. I don’t think I’ll ever be good at it!

Also, some of my fundraising plans had to be reconsidered, and now I am coming up with alternatives as the movie afternoon I’d planned didn’t sell as many tickets as I’d hoped, and corporate donations for a trivia night have been hard to obtain. I’m a hugely passionate baker, so morning teas through my various work locations will also play a part in raising funds, which is a double bonus cause I get to do something I enjoy, feed people I care about, all while doing something positive.

What advice would you offer to other people looking to complete a challenge like this?

As hard as some parts of this have been, I’d encourage anyone looking to spread positivity and do good for others to get involved with an Inspired Adventure. Not only will you create awareness, but you will also learn about yourself too … isn’t that what this whole journey of life is about?
