Sustainable Clothing vs. Fast Fashion: Why You Should Care

Now more than ever, there is a fluorescent light being shed on the fashion industry and its thumbs-down impact it has on our beloved planet and people. While oil still remains the most polluting industry in the world, the fashion industry comes in at a close second. The reason for this comes down to two crippling words: fast fashion.

Sure, the low price points associated with fast fashion can be tempting for any consumer, but the overall price of fast fashion is wreaking havoc on our world, in more ways than one.

Waste

According to a recent study conducted by Greenpeace, around 400 billion square meters of textiles are produced every year, of which 60 billion meters are left as waste on the cutting room floor.  80 billion pieces of clothing are produced worldwide, and 3 out of 4 of those pieces will end up in landfill or be incarcerated. Unfortunately, only one quarter will be recycled.

Water Consumption and Pollution

Water scarcity affects more than one billion people on a global scale and every drop of water should be precious. Disturbingly, just one pair of jeans requires 7,000 litres of water to produce, and 2 billion pairs are being manufactured every year.

A whopping 2,700 litres of water is used to make just one t-shirt… that’s the amount of water one average human will consume over 900 days!

And what about water pollution? Beyond a garment’s vibrant print, statement embellishments and glistening finish lies countless toxic chemicals. After agriculture, textile dyeing is the world’s second biggest polluter of clean water. 1.7 million tonnes of mixed chemicals are used in garment production – most notably, dangerous chemicals like PFCs, leaving a detrimental and lasting impact on our environment.

The People

A 2016 Oxfam report revealed more than 60 million people work in the garment industry to churn out cheap, replicated clothing. More than 15 million of those people are based in Asia and over 80% are female, underage and from poorer, rural regions. They work unbearably long hours and earn as little as 39 cents an hour to produce garments sold to fast fashion giants, for mere cents apiece. Their less-than-fair wages do not even cover basic living costs, like food and accommodation.

How You Can Help

The inconvenient truths about fast fashion, our endangered planet and unethical industry practices have finally emerged from under the rug, and are gaining media attention and becoming topics of conversation around the world.

New, informed and sustainable fashion labels are emerging every day and ethical fashion is starting to thrive. Pre-existing brands are joining the sustainable wagon to reduce their carbon footprint and improve social conditions, and more people are donating their clothing.

There are simple steps you can also take to help make a positive change to the fashion industry. If more people boycott fast fashion, there will be less of a market for it.

  • Invest in environmentally friendly materials. Learn more here.
  • Download Good on You – a conscious shopping app providing ratings on fashion brands based on their ethical, environmental and social impact.
  • Support ECA-accredited brands and encourage other brands to get accredited.
  • Shop at op shops and markets – one person’s trash is another person’s treasure after all.
  • Recycle, repurpose and buy garments on buy/swap/sell websites and on Etsy.
  • Learn to DIY or turn your old clothes into something new by altering them.
  • Shop sustainable brands! Well Made Clothes is a great online marketplace for local, sustainable and fair trade brands.

4 Ways to Get into the Adventurous Spirit

Whether you are three weeks or three months away from your next big adventure, it’s never too early to get into an adventurous spirit. Humans are creatures of habit and when we are in one place long enough, we naturally fall into a routine. When we travel, everything is new and exciting – but if we are not used to all the novelty, it can be a bit overwhelming. Here are five things you can do to help build up your adventurous side so that you have an amazing and authentic experience abroad.

1. Be curious and rediscover your neighbourhood

Spend an afternoon in your neighbourhood and go into shops, cafes or bars with the intention of meeting people and learning something new. Every person and business has a story, which is woven into the fabric of your neighbourhood. Take time to ask about, listen and enjoy the stories that define a place. Learn this skill now and when you’re on your adventure, you will truly be able to know a place rather than just skim its surface.

2. Host a traveller in your home

Australia is home to over half a million backpackers and long-term travellers from all over the world. Speaking from experience, most of these travellers are on a strict budget and would like a free or cheap place to spend the night. Chances are, you could find someone from your next travel destination and get a local’s perspective before you leave on your next adventure. A meal and a couch to sleep on is a small price to pay for knowledge that you might find indispensable on your next adventure.

If you’re planning on hosting someone in your house, use a site like couchsurfing.com so that you can see reviews from previous hosts to ensure a safe experience.

3. Broaden your pallet

Depending on where your next adventure is, you might be in a situation where you are expected to eat some funky stuff. So that you’re not caught off guard when you start your adventure, try going to a home-style restaurant of your travel destination’s origin. Can’t find one? Don’t worry. Just make it a habit to push your culinary comfort zone by trying new foods and you’ll do much better enjoying the cuisine abroad.

4. Start recording your life now

When I started traveling, I thought that I would be doing so many interesting things that the pictures would take themselves that I would have pages to write about all my adventures. However, after a long day of traveling, all I wanted to do was crawl into bed and sleep because I was so exhausted. Build the habit of recording your life now and it will be more natural on your next adventure. This will also encourage you to do more things worth taking pictures of and writing about.

Adventurers of The Month:
Berlian Ayudya and Tom Walter

Berlian Ayudya and Tom Walter

Cause: UNICEF Australia
Adventure: UNICEF Climb for Kids Everest Base Camp 2018

As our Adventurers of the Month, Berlian and Tom have scored themselves a $100 Paddy Pallin voucher! To be our next month’s winner, make sure you’re uploading your journey to social and use the hashtag #IveBeenInspired.

What motivated you to take on your Inspired Adventure?

We’ve both been supporters of UNICEF for a while and are so supportive of all the work they do for underprivileged children in Australia and around the world. Looking back at our childhood, we couldn’t imagine becoming the people we are today without the privileges and security we had, so what UNICEF champions to do in giving kids the best start to life is something that we both feel strongly about. When we received an email one day inviting us to participate in the Everest Base Camp Climb for Kids challenge, we were not only inspired to support such a great cause but we were also excited about the prospect of committing to a challenge that will test us physically and mentally.

How are you feeling about the challenge ahead? Have you ever been to Nepal before?

We’re very excited, determined and nervous about our journey ahead, as it’s the first big trek we’ve ever done. Neither of us has been to Nepal before but we have friends who have visited the country and conquered the Base Camp trek, and they’ve all come back with some great stories.

What have been some of the highlights of your Inspired journey so far?

Sharing our story with others to galvanise their support has been great. Our family and friends have been so supportive (albeit a little scared for us) and have offered to help with raising awareness and donations for our cause. Another highlight would be hiking to Mt Kosciuszko over the Easter long weekend. We committed to two hikes, travelling around 20km each day. It was tiring but really worth it!

"We’ve both been supporters of UNICEF for a while and are so supportive of all the work they do for underprivileged children in Australia and around the world."

Do you have any tips for other people currently training for their Inspired Adventure?

We’ve found that mixing up our training has been really important for us to stay motivated and engaged. We’ll do big hikes on the weekend, but then back it up with functional training, yoga, Pilates or running during the week.

Have you noticed any changes or transformation in your life since taking on your first adventure?

To prepare for the challenge, we made some pretty significant changes in our lifestyle, including what we eat. As two big foodies, this is perhaps the biggest change we’ve made, but it’s paying off. We’ve both lost weight and our friends and family have been very complimentary – either that or they’re all incredibly good liars.

What advice would you offer to other people looking to complete a challenge like this?

Embrace the challenge and commit to your training.

What motivated you to take on your Inspired Adventure?

I did a cycle challenge for Plan Australia for Girls’ Education in 2013 with Inspired Adventures and it completely changed my life. I now appreciate how lucky I am to live in this wonderful country and how and why many people in developing countries struggle. As a result of going on the cycle, I now travel to Cambodia about once a year to help out over there with Cambodian Cocoon.

Also, I love Edgar’s Mission. Pam Ahern’s stories on Edgar’s website are uplifting, can be somewhat sad, but nearly always have a happy ending and are educational. I have stopped eating most animals products, however, my aim is to be 100% vegan. I have also visited EM on numerous occasions with different friends to share the joy of Edgar’s and education about the factory farming industry.

I love orangutans and follow the Palm Oil Investigation site and use their app when shopping to avoid buying any products with palm oil, especially uncertified palm oil. It really is tragic what is happening to the world’s rainforests, especially in Indonesia, because of palm oil production. Therefore when I saw this trek, I knew I just had to jump on board!

How are you feeling about the challenge ahead? Have you ever been to South East Asia before?

I am looking forward to the actual trek, however there is a lot of work to do in preparation for the challenge, both fundraising and physically. Sometimes I feel a bit anxious or overwhelmed about it – and sometimes I feel on top of the world. Life can be so busy and it can be hard to find the time to do the organising for fundraising and the training, but I know I will be okay!

What have been some of the highlights of your Inspired journey so far?

I feel confident and in awe of how wonderful my friendship groups are and how people never cease to amaze me with their support and generosity.

"I love orangutans and follow the Palm Oil Investigation site. I use their app when shopping to avoid buying any products with palm oil, especially uncertified palm oil."

Do you have any tips for other people currently fundraising for their Inspired Adventure?

I have learnt that it never hurts to ask – the worst thing that can happen is that someone will say no.

I called my vet a few weeks back, as I remembered he had an Edgar’s Mission donation box on the counter when I took my dogs for their yearly check up, and thought they might be interested in the Husk Cups with EMs logo on the band. I rang them and they said to bring them in. The owner bought a stack of them for all his staff worth about $250! They are now selling the Husk Cups to some of their customers at the front desk.

Have you noticed any changes or transformation in your life since taking on your first adventure?

This is my second adventure, but as I said above, my life definitely transformed and I expect this challenge to do the same.  I have found that so many people do not realise the things that are happening to animals in factory farms and are shocked and astounded when I inform them. I am careful how to approach this with people and wait for the right opportunity to do so, to ‘plant a seed’ so to speak, so that they may investigate this further themselves and hopefully visit Edgar’s and decide to cut down or cut out animal-containing foods.

"I feel confident and in awe of how wonderful my friendship groups are and how people never cease to amaze me with their support and generosity. "

What advice would you offer to other people looking to complete a challenge like this?

To think outside the square and don’t be afraid to ask.

If you are not successful with a fundraiser, don’t give up (I had a garage sale last weekend and was disappointed with the $$ result).  One of my friends had a Thermomix demonstration at her house. The consultant suggested I sell Thermomix raffle tickets, they are $20 each and people tend to go nuts over them. I aim to sell 200 with the help of my friendship group. The first 100 tickets buy the Thermomix (valued at $2000) and the $$ from any tickets sold after the first 100 will go directly to Edgar’s Mission – so if you’re trying to find another way to raise money, ring Thermomix and find out how to contact your local Thermomix consultant.

Don’t be afraid to ask people to help out (such as your vet, local businesses or friends) with fundraising. If you have a friend who makes and sells candles, jewellery, etc. ask them if they would like to donate some of the profit towards your cause if you sell some of the items for them. My friend owns Husk Cups and she offered for me to sell them to raise money for EM. It’s a win for her, and most importantly, EM.  She has also made jewellery to sell on Etsy in the past, and has given me some jewellery to sell at work etc. Show a friend an uplifting video on EM’s website, and open up the conversation about EM’s work that way. Why not invite friends to go on a visit with you to EM in the springtime?

What motivated you to take on your Inspired Adventure?

I have struggled through adversity in the past and managed to overcome some tough obstacles along the way.  I know a turning point for me was when my new boss, and later my mentor recognised and acknowledged not only my work but my reliance. She lifted me up and I’ll be forever grateful. After realising what difference that made in my life I decided I wanted to give back to others and hopefully help lift others. I love travelling, experiencing different cultures and contributing in some way, so an Inspired adventure seemed like a perfect fit for me.

Have you noticed any changes or transformation in your life since signing up for the adventure?

Absolutely great changes! I started regularly exercising which has been fantastic physically and mentally. My training buddy and I have inspired others to start exercising too, just by sharing the story. It’s a great feeling seeing our friends and colleagues becoming more positive and happy within themselves.

Through fundraising I’ve raised awareness of the cause and difficulties faced by our sisters in the Pacific.

What advice would you offer to other people looking to complete a challenge like this?

I would say, don’t over think it,  just sign up and go for it. The journey to get there is transformational and I can’t wait for the trek,  that’s the reward.

Above is a photo of me with my gorgeous friend and training buddy, Cheryl. She has loved the training and also shares what a positive impact it has made to her life. We aren’t glamorous in this picture but neither is life sometimes! My friends, Elle and Cheryl, have supported and helped with my fundraising activities, so this adventure has already touched several lives

5 Tips For Eco Friendly Travelling

Whether you’re planning a new adventure or you’re set to jet soon, we’ve rounded up a few simple tips to make your journey greener.

1. Walk, Cycle or Take Public Transport

Reduce your carbon footprint by opting for eco-friendly modes of transportation. If you’re sightseeing, hire a bike or take public transport – you’ll enjoy the social and economic benefits too! Just got off a long haul flight? Stretch your legs by walking to your destinations. The World Health Organisation recommends individuals should increase their physical activity to 10,000 steps per day to improve health and vitality – glow green more like it!

2. Be Water Wise

Plastic water bottles are one of the main culprits generating an enormous amount of waste in Australia and around the world. To help reduce the number of plastic bottles going into landfill and the environment, consume your h20 on the go with refillable BPA-free water bottles.

As the old adage goes, “Water, water everywhere, nor any drop to drink!” Two-thirds of the global population live under conditions of severe water scarcity, affecting more than 1 billion people. Every drop is sacred and should be conserved. Be shower smart by limiting your showers to just one per day and turn the water off while your scrub, shampoo and condition. Keep it short, turn taps off properly and recycle your towel – you’d do that at home anyway, right? Go that extra green mile by packing eco-friendly, organic body care products such as body wash and hair care – they won’t pollute the water going down the drain.

3. Preserve Energy

This one is pretty easy; just adapt your home life to hotel life. You can do this by leaving the trusty ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign on your door for most of your stay. Housekeeping wouldn’t be vacuuming your floor and cleaning your bathrooms every day at home, so why do they need to abroad? If you run out of amenities, simply request them at the front desk.

Always ensure all lights and electrical appliances are switched off before you leave the room – just like you would at home.

4. Participate in eco-friendly activities

Skip the helicopter or speedboat ride and go snorkelling, climbing or hiking! You will not only soak up the natural beauty of your surroundings, you’ll be minimising your environmental impact and reducing the use of fossil fuels.

Don’t let the TV hold you captive while you’re on holiday. Put the remote down and immerse yourself in the rich culture and history of your destination. Meet the locals, try the cuisine and explore everything that passport stamp has to offer.

5. Travel Lightly

The less you pack, the less fuel your mode of transport will use. Keep your nomadic wardrobe minimal and opt for lightweight, warm, versatile, wrinkle-free and quick drying pieces. With less weight on your back, you will also glide through the gates with ease.

5 Tips For Packing Light

Whether you’re about to embark on your first overseas adventure or you’re whisking yourself away for the weekend, the most important rule of thumb for travellers is to not weigh yourself down.

To help you travel light, we’ve rounded up 5 simple tips so that you can master the art of packing smart!

1. Don’t leave it to the last minute

While we understand that life can get busy and time can get lost, a common rookie error for travellers is leaving the packing to the last minute. If you’re rushing or tired, you’re more likely to forget the essentials – and we’re not talking about your toothbrush. Think important travel documents, medication and that incredible DSLR camera sitting beside your bed.

Give yourself enough time to thoughtfully process and plan out your checklist. This will also allow you to include smart staples to help lighten your load.

2. Opt for lightweight clothing

Your sightseeing capsule wardrobe should include lightweight, warm, versatile, wrinkle-free and quick drying pieces. Merino wool is a popular all-round natural fabric that will become your lifeline on the road. It will keep you warm in frosty conditions and cool in humidity – plus unlike synthetic fabrics, merino wool is odour resistant – so perfect for multiple wears!

3. Roll, don't fold

While rolling may not necessarily lighten your load, it will certainly help you maximise your space, combat creased clothing and help keep your bag organised. This simple tactic is perfect for your carry-on luggage where bulky culprits reside.

4. Minimalism is a must

Some like to stay stylish while they stride, but your time abroad will be infinitely easier if you just pack the basics alongside a few statement pieces. We’re not saying cute and cosy can’t co-exist; you just have to exercise your creative flair by mixing, matching and layering your garments.

What about your feet? Opt for a neutral pair of everyday shoes that are comfortable, waterproof and practical for your destination.

5. Choose the right luggage

Depending on the location, type and length of your adventure, try to limit the number of bags you’ll be carrying. Steer clear of awkwardly large and heavy suitcases that will drag you down while you try to navigate your way through busy crowds. If possible, try stick to luggage that is within the carry-on bag size limits (your arms will thank you!).

6 signs you’re ready for your next adventure

True adventure can re-awaken your zest for life – here are 6 signs you’re ready for your next adventure!

1. You crave excitement

The routine of everyday life is making you feel restless, and you want to shake things up and create more excitement in the everyday. Do you feel like you’re sitting still too long? Then it’s probably time to get up and get moving.

Group hiking

2. You don’t feel challenged

Challenges help us to grow and learn about ourselves. If you no longer feel challenged in whatever you are doing, it might be time to start creating an environment where you can grow. Many of our Inspired participants claim that the adventure helped them realise that challenging yourself is the best way to realise what you are capable of, even if you didn’t know it.

3. You feel listless

When was the last time you felt passionate about something? Feeling listless is common when we aren’t living for something, and getting up each day without a goal to work towards. If you’re feeling like this, it’s time to start thinking about what you want to achieve, where you want to be and how you want to get there.

4. You find it hard to get up every morning

If you’re slogging through your mornings, and using coffee to get through the day it may be that your zest for life has taken a hit. For some of us, waking up in the morning is always going to take extra effort, but if you’re struggling everyday and getting no better, it might be time to start thinking about how to add more adventure to your life.

5. You’re daydreaming about travel

Whether it’s the peak of Machu Picchu, or China’s Great Wall, you spend your days thinking about being somewhere (anywhere) more exciting.

6. You want to prove something to yourself

Achievement is a hell of a feeling. Maybe you don’t know whether you can reach Everest Base Camp, but knowing that it’s possible makes you want to prove that you can do it.

If you’re itching for adventure, check out the upcoming challenges on our 2018 calendar and find your adventure!

Aussie charities share bright ideas at Vivid

Everyone in Sydney knows about the festival of lights that happens every winter – and if you don’t, once you see the way the Opera House and Harbour Bridge are lit up every night you will never forget Vivid. This year’s exhibitions were bigger, brighter, and more beautiful than the years before, with Aboriginal song lines shown on the opera house, a cathedral of light, and much more!

A few members of Inspired HQ were lucky enough to go to Taronga Zoo for their inaugural participation in the Vivid festival, an illuminated trail between the animal enclosures called “Be the Light for the Wild”. Taronga Conservation Society Australia showcased the 10 species that they have dedicated themselves to protecting for their centenary: five native Australian animals, like the Platypus and the Bilby, and five that are on the brink of extinction in Sumatra – a biodiversity hotspot of critical natural importance right on Australia’s doorstep.

The amazing multimedia light sculptures of animals ranged from the Sumatran Tiger to the brightly coloured Corroboree frog, and were supported by a cast of characters that included the echidna, crocodile, bush turkey, and even interactive Cicadas that lit up and sang when you cooee. At points along the trail, you could look up and see hundreds of paper lanterns that had been created by NSW school children. They were painted with the faces of frogs, tigers, elephants, and gorillas, and lit the way from exhibit to exhibit.

In case you were wondering what the animals thought of all this, a Taronga representative said that the animals had been slowly exposed to music, lights, and more activity every night for weeks to ensure that they would be comfortable during the Vivid festival. A few animals came out to say hi along the way, though most preferred to stay inside their night enclosures. Giraffes were seen placidly chomping on their feed, high above the heads of the crowd, and small Sumatran elephants meandered around their enclosure near the Sumatran Tiger statue.

But Vivid isn’t just about all the pretty light shows, it’s an opportunity to see the best of the best in music (Hyatus Kaiyote anyone?!), international speakers (Jenji Kohan, creator of hit Netflix series Orange Is The New Black!), creative workshops like the crafty etsy workshop, and great ideas.

Charities are usually among those who have the best and most forward thinking ideas, and this year they did not disappoint. Amnesty International hosted a workshop called “Art is Our Artillery to Defend Human Rights”, highlighting the difficulty that I think we’re all having in this digital age: how to stand out among the crowd, especially with a challenging idea.

Amnesty International Australia’ Indigenous Rights campaigner, Roxanne Moore, discussed creative strategies showcasing new ideas on how to communicate difficult issues for public action. Roxanne highlighted the potential opportunities we have to show the creativity and power of Indigenous people, using various mediums to communicate their rights, passions and abilities.

beyondblue took this opportunity to set one of their awareness events, The Culture Blue Day, to the background of this festival of lights. With four exclusive Vivid LIVE performances on rotation and in clear view throughout the evening, the beauty of the festival was incorporated organically into the evening’s program of entertainment acts, silent auctions, raffles, games, and a photo booth!

Culture Blue Day is an initiative in support of beyondblue that generates awareness and seeks to reduce the stigma that can sometimes accompany issues of mental illness. This event provided a forum for open discussion of the issue, and a channel through which interested parties could donate funds and make a real difference to the lives of people affected by depression, anxiety and suicide.

These amazing charities have all found creative ways to reach out to community by taking part in a staple of the Sydney winter event calendar, Vivid festival. There’s no doubt that they are innovative and forward thinking in their approaches, and it’s all for a good cause!
