What inspired you to take on your Inspired Adventure with PCFA?

I had the privilege of being introduced to Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) team through a community partnership in Western Australia. I was encouraged by the passionate staff who in turn inspired my participation in this once in a lifetime experience whilst helping to raise awareness of prostate cancer. Having lost my father to cancer at 3 years of age, I am passionate about raising awareness of serious men’s health issues and promoting regular health checks. Early intervention is the best form of prevention, we all know that. However, the best analogy I have heard for encouraging men to have regular checks with their doctor is “when your car service light flashes, most men will take their car straight to the dealership for a service – yet we don’t take notice of our own warning lights when they start flashing”.

Had either of you ever been to Africa before?

After holidaying extensively through South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Namibia in 2013, my fiancée and I spent our 2014 New Year’s break volunteer teaching in Zanzibar.

The children we taught had nothing. For us to even reach our school, we had to trek through jungle until we reached a concrete box with no electricity, no windows, no chairs nor desks – and certainly no teaching provisions! The benefit of foresight had equipped us with teaching resources and AFL footballs, much to our students’ excitement.

After such an enriching experience, I always had a desire to return to Tanzania. I am grateful for the donations I received to assist me in raising funds for PCFA, a charity which I passionately support. I am also so grateful for the opportunity to climb Mt Kilimanjaro.

What had been some of the highlights of your fundraising and adventure experience?

I know it might sound a little cliché but the best thing about memories is making them and I will never forget the memories shared during our trip to Tanzania, whilst collectively raising over $60,000 for such a worthy cause.

Mount Kilimanjaro promised to take our breath away both figuratively and literally. The views during our climb towards the summit were incredible. The challenge of climbing to approximately 19,340 feet above sea level and crossing five ecological zones was tough.

If you believe, you will achieve!

What have been your biggest challenges in taking on an Inspired Adventure? How did you overcome this?

Convincing my mother and fiancé not to worry!

Tanzanian Rift Valley Tours were exceptional from the moment we arrived at Mt Kilimanjaro airport. This combined with having a medically trained Australian team leader with an interest in altitude sickness and rural and remote medicine, provided the perfect combination of local and specialist knowledge.

As a tourist and volunteer who has travelled to Tanzania previously, it is rare that the standards achieved in Africa replicate those delivered by western tour operators.

The diligence shown and relentless management of climbers during our preparation gave all team members the safest chance to reach the summit and should be acknowledged. This provided a level of comfort along with various risk mitigation strategies in the unlikely event of an accident or emergency.

Have you noticed any changes or transformation in your life since taking on your adventure?

Many of the conversation topics during the trip are unlikely to feature during my working week, but I will certainly smile each time I look at the Mt Kilimanjaro certificate now proudly positioned in my office. By engaging in ‘personal social responsibility’ and trying to make the world a better place is extremely fulfilling – if you believe, you will achieve! My only question is what adventure will be next…

What advice would you offer to other people looking to complete a challenge like this?

Commit to a challenge today! The experience will be memorable and deeply rewarding. The photos of the sunrise we witnessed as we neared the summit cannot do it justice. Viewing it from above the clouds as we approached Uhuru Peak in the early hours was an experience I’ll never forget.

What inspired you to take on your Inspired Adventure with Plan?

For me it was talking with Kerry, she did last year’s Trek in Nepal and raised funds for Because I am a Girl. By comparison our childhood has been one of privilege, we received a good education and have been able to make our own choices with the support of our families. The girls we are fundraising for do not have the same luxury or choices as we did and we wanted to help change this.

Had either of you ever been to Cambodia before?

No we haven’t been!

What had been some of the highlights of your fundraising and adventure experience?

The highlights from our fundraising would have to be the support from our local community, the generous donations given for our raffle were, at times, overwhelming. The highlights from our Cambodian adventure would be firstly to meet a team of wonderful people with such generosity of spirit, so caring and giving. Then to visit the projects and to see how our support is making a change to the lives of the children and young adults involved.  The Kingdom of Cambodia is an amazing place, the people have a difficult life but still manage to smile and made us feel so welcome as we cycled through the villages. On our last day we met a young lady who was herself a sponsored child, she is now a tour guide with the Ministry of Tourism and is sponsoring 3 children, it put everything into perspective.

"Just do it, it will change your life."

What have been your biggest challenges in taking on an Inspired Adventure? How did you overcome this?

With both Kerry & I working full time and fundraising it was hard to find time to do consistent training. We made a consious effort to spend Sunday’s on our bikes and would get in a 45-50kms ride.

Have you noticed any changes or transformation in your life since taking on your adventure?

It has given us a greater appreciation for the lives we have here.

What advice would you offer to other people looking to complete a challenge like this?

Just do it, it will change your life.

What inspired you to take on your Inspired Adventure with Perth Children's Hospital?

What inspired me to take the adventure was a love for running. The charity is also very close to my heart. Having two young daughters and knowing the great work Perth Children’s Hospital is doing, it was hard to resist the challenge. I am looking forward to seeing London for the first time and meeting new friends.

How are you feeling about the challenge ahead?

I am excited about the challenge ahead, I am learning so much about raising the money! It’s only early on for fundraising but my highlights so far would be some of the comments left on my fundraising page from friends that have children in and out of the hospital regularly. It really makes me want to smash the $10,000 target!

What have been your biggest challenges in taking on an Inspired Adventure? How did you overcome this?

The biggest challenges so far are fitting in full-time work, spending time with my family, running 70k a week and dedicating time to organise events for PCH. But I just set the alarm for 3:30 am and enjoy getting extra hours out of the day!

Have you noticed any changes or transformation in your life since taking on your first adventure?

The biggest change from taking on this event would be I have lost about 12kg. I am also eating healthier.

The advice I would offer to others taking on an adventure would be to choose a charity that is close to your heart – enjoy and be inspired by what you are going to achieve!

My mum inspired me to take on this challenge. 12 months ago she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I watched the strongest women I know crumble. Whilst mum crumbled BCNA wrapped their caring and supportive hands around her and helped her get through one of her toughest life journeys. I want to help BCNA help other women the way they helped my mum.

How are you feeling about the challenge ahead? Have you ever been to Central Australia before?

I am excited! I enjoy being physically active and have a great love for the outdoors! I haven’t been to Central Australia before so I am really looking forward to it!

We are in the early stages of fundraising, however it has been a blast working with my parents (who are walking with me) to organise some great events in the community.

What have been your biggest challenges in taking on an Inspired Adventure? How did you overcome this?

One of the biggest challenges I am facing is being confident in approaching people and telling our story! I have found that by being able to share my training journey on social media platforms I have been able to build the confidence I require to speak about it openly with people.

Have you noticed any changes or transformation in your life since taking on your first adventure?

Since taking on this adventure I have gained a great drive and passion to reach my goals.

What are you most looking forward to about your upcoming adventure?

What inspired you to take on your Inspired Adventure with the Suicide Prevention Australia?

I am a member of the Mental Health Commission of New South Wales Suicide Prevention Advisory Panel and I became aware of the goal of the adventure, i.e. to raise funds to bring indigenous elders to the National Suicide Prevention Conference. Knowing that every dollar raised was going to a cause I was passionate about kicked the plan into gear. The Larapinta Trail was also on my bucket list so it seemed like a great opportunity to combine the two into one.

How are you feeling about the challenge ahead? Have you ever been to Central Australia before?

I am looking forward to heading into Central Australia. I have been to Uluru and Kata Tjuta before but only for a very short time. This trek will allow me to absorb more and more of this part of Australia, which I just love and respect.

What have been some of the highlights of your fundraising experience so far?

Suicide is a tough topic and with it brings so many negative elements.  There is so much stigma surrounding suicide and for me, the highlight was the willingness of people to support me directly knowing I was raising funds for suicide prevention and the flow on positive effect this can have on suicide prevention both directly and indirectly.

"The highlight was the willingness of people to support me directly knowing I was raising funds for suicide prevention"

What have been your biggest challenges in taking on an Inspired Adventure? How did you overcome this?

Time. We are all so time poor these days and finding that space of 7 days to complete the trek was the challenge, as I had to put aside family time and professional commitments.

Have you noticed any changes or transformation in your life since taking on your first adventure?

I am someone who absolutely loves meeting new people and understanding what inspires them in their life. One of the greatest benefits of doing an Inspired Adventure is being involved in the training treks that we do every month before we head out. It gives you a chance to meet the brilliant team from Inspired Adventures and also you get to meet so many wonderful people who are embarking treks all over the world, supporting causes and organisations that mean so much to them. It is such a positive and rewarding experience that is not limited to your own trek and trek buddies.

What are you most looking forward to about your upcoming adventure?

Being completely devoid of technology in a remote part of our wonderful country, to be able to see, feel and smell our beautiful country and not be distracted by the modern world. I have sailed across the world on my own yacht and one of the greatest times I had was when we were so far from civilization and you can just absorb yourself in your immediate and completely natural environment and I am so looking forward to the remoteness and reconnecting with mother earth.

What advice would you offer to other people looking to complete a challenge like this?

If you are just thinking about doing an Inspired Adventures trek but are a little unsure about it, speak to the team and get the ball rolling. Identify with a location and cause that you are inspired by and start the ball rolling. Speak to your friends/family/workmates who you think would like to be involved and get a team together. And don’t just think the benefits will be derived from the trek itself. The lead up with all the training treks enhances and broadens the benefits you will gain from your involvement.

Don’t be concerned if it may be just you on your own that may be doing a trek with a whole bunch of people you don’t know, positive people are just the best to be with. And I don’t intend to stop my involvement after I complete this trek, I will certainly be doing more of the monthly training treks and then plan on doing more treks and fundraising in the future.

"I am so looking forward to the remoteness and reconnecting with mother earth"

What inspired you to take on your Inspired Adventure with SANE Australia?

It was a combination of things really. I LOVE adventure and was looking for something exciting to do this year, and I really enjoy long walks in exciting places. I have wanted to visit the Great Wall of China since I was about 10 years old, and for the last decade and a bit, I have been an avid advocate for mental health, and particularly that of mums. A friend had recently done a trek to Peru with Inspired Adventures, so I did a bit of research and found this one; it was like all my personal planets aligned. I absolutely had to sign up.

(The lure of a duck dinner at the end of our trek, which also happens to fall on my birthday, was just a bonus!)

How are you feeling about the challenge ahead? Have you ever been to China before?

I’m really excited. A little anxious I may not have the fitness levels required to trek without slowing everyone up, but I think my excitement and anticipation for the trip will make up for that. I hope so anyway! I’m fascinated by the history of the area and of the Wall itself, and I just think the whole experience will be incredible.

I have been to Shanghai before – I was chosen to be a Live Positively Ambassador for a large global corporation, and was invited to visit a few of their corporate spaces in Shanghai. It was mostly a business trip, so we really only got a few hours to explore the city. It was amazing – as were the dumplings, which I still get cravings for even six years on.

"It is a constant reminder that I am making a small difference to someone and that support services like SANE Australia are very much needed"

What have been some of the highlights of your fundraising experience so far?

I’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity of some people. It’s really inspiring. I’ve also found people quietly opening up about their experiences of mental illness, and although that doesn’t really relate to fundraising, per se, it is a constant reminder that I am making a small difference to someone and that support services like SANE Australia are very much needed. It’s a little overwhelming and very humbling, but also extremely fulfilling.

A photo posted by Mad Cow (Amanda Cox) (@madcowsdiary) on

What have been your biggest challenges in taking on an Inspired Adventure? How did you overcome this?

I think my biggest challenge has been ensuring I can do enough training for the trek; I don’t want to struggle along but want to be fit enough to really absorb the whole experience. I work full time, and have a small writing business on top of that, I have three boys and a husband, too. So my days are busy.

I’ve overcome it by prioritising my need to train, and incorporating walking into my commute to and from work; each week I get off at a train station earlier and walk from there, and have pretty much set up a small wardrobe of work attire at the office to make life a little easier.

I also take the family along with me on Sunday adventures walking wherever we can (you can follow that progress on my Instagram, with the hashtag I’ve created especially for this #MadCowSANETrain). We get to spend time together, and I get to train – they pretend they hate it, but they don’t really.

Have you noticed any changes or transformation in your life since taking on your first adventure?

I have a lot more of a positive outlook on things, and have much less time for drama and negativity in my life. I also feel a lot more excited and inspired about lots of things – the proverbial “just do it”, which I have adopted because I’m just so busy and working towards a lot of things I’m enjoying doing, has taken a priority in my thoughts, which has been great.

Having the desire to do the trek as easily as I can has really meant I just do the training, even if I don’t feel like it, or it’s cold or raining, or I’m tired … and this attitude has spread to other areas of my life. I love it.

What are you most looking forward to about your upcoming adventure?

What I’m really looking forward to is feeling the whole experience. When I walk in places with incredible views, I just immerse myself in those moments, and that’s what I’m looking forward to. It’s almost overwhelming, and just an amazing sensation. That and being supported – and supporting – others as we go, people with similar desires to make a difference around a cause that is so important to me.

I also have to add – dumplings and duck! I’m so looking forward to those things!

"I feel a lot more excited and inspired about lots of things"

What advice would you offer to other people looking to complete a challenge like this?

I’d just encourage them to do the training, and keep the end goal in sight. Take it one step at a time (pardon the pun!), follow the recommendations for both the training and the fundraising, and just ask for help and support. Surround yourself with people who are willing to help you achieve your goals, and connect with like-minded people who are willing to accompany you as you do the physical training.

As for the fundraising – I’m of the belief that if you don’t ask, the answer is always no, so just ask and keep asking.

Be adventurous … it makes it all more fun.

What inspired you to take on your Inspired Adventure with NBCF?

I have always fundraised for the NBCF in the past, holding biggest breakfast events during October each year and attending other events.  I attend these events in honour of all the survivors of breast cancer and those who have not been so fortunate.  As women, we need to look after each other and do what we can to find much needed cures and less invasive medical procedures for those diagnosed.

What were some of the highlights of your fundraising experience?

A huge highlight for me was how my friends and family rallied around me to support and encourage me to raise my funds.  I held a number of small events, but believe it or not my biggest fundraising success was selling chocolates and snacks.  I set up a ‘tuck shop’ at my work where I sold cans of drink, packets of chips and chocolates.  From just chocolates alone I raised about $2,000! I luckily had the support of the people I work with to keep them supplied with sugary treats.

What was your biggest challenge in taking on an Inspired Adventure? How did you overcome this?

When I signed up to trek the Great Wall of China, my biggest challenge was that I was not fit enough to take on such an adventure.  So ten months before the trek, I changed my lifestyle completely, began eating healthy and increased my exercise.  I started seeing a personal trainer who worked on building up my strength in both legs and upper body.  I would walk up and down 17 flights of stairs every day at work just to build my muscle tone. On the trek in China, it was hard physically, but my determination saw me complete all 5 days on the wall.

"As women, we need to look after each other and do what we can to find much-needed cures and less invasive medical procedures for those diagnosed [with breast cancer]."

Have you noticed any changes or transformation in your life since taking on your adventure?

What was the best part of your adventure?

I met some amazing and inspiring people in China, everyone was willing to help out and everyone got along together.  Our tour guides and Inspired Adventure’s Team Leaders also kept the team together and kept everyone motivated. Oh, can I also mention that The Great Wall of China was a pretty damn impressive thing to see? I liked that I got to see sections of the wall that the every day tourists would not normally bother to go and see.

What advice would you offer to other people looking to complete a challenge like this?

No matter how fit you are, keep pushing yourself to do better before you go. The fitter you are, the more fun you will have on the adventure.

What inspired you to take on your Inspired Adventure with the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation?

It’s my 30th birthday this year and I really wanted to do something special because I’ve never celebrated a birthday before. I started running in 2015 and decided I would tick off 30 with a marathon! I really wanted to run the NYC marathon but couldn’t justify doing it just for me so I went on a hunt for a cause to be a part of. PMHF has touched so many Western Australian Families and does SO much good for the kids in WA as soon as I saw they had a team I had to be a part of it.

How are you feeling about the challenge ahead? Have you ever run a marathon before?

NYC will be my first marathon! I have run a number of halves but have never fully committed before. I’m so excited with the fundraising aspect. I feel like I have been working towards this since November 2015 and by the time the NYC marathon rolls around it will be a huge celebration for the work I have done physically and the results we have achieved for PMH Foundation.

What have been some of the highlights of your fundraising experience so far?

Seeing the community come together. There is so much negativity in Western Australia right now, so many families are really struggling in our economic climate and yet they are digging deep and helping in anyway they can. It’s not just monetary donations; families have donated clothing for a clothes swap; cakes have been baked and donated, businesses have donated their services … it’s really nice to be a part of something.

"It takes a lot of attention and a lot of noise. And you can’t do it alone! I have a little army of family and friends who are helping me spread the word."

What have been your biggest challenges in taking on an Inspired Adventure? How did you overcome this?

I am really shy. I don’t like a lot of attention and I am uncomfortable in the spotlight and I really don’t like asking for help. I’ve had to move past all of that and focus on the cause and doing what I can to bring it into focus. You can’t just quietly raise $10,000. It takes a lot of attention and a lot of noise. And you can’t do it alone! I have a little army of family and friends who are helping me spread the word.

What are you most looking forward to about your upcoming adventure?

Running through NYC! I love everything about New York. I literally am counting down the days until November 6!

What advice would you offer to other people looking to complete a challenge like this?

Just do it! Don’t think about how hard it will be, don’t worry about that big figure at the end. It’s just like running…one step at a time and each step moves you forwards. Trust yourself because if you want to make it happen, it will happen!

What inspired you to take on your first Inspired Adventure for UNICEF?

As a Qantas and UNICEF Change for Good Ambassador, I was given the opportunity to visit Myanmar on a UNICEF field trip. The trip was such an eye-opening and rewarding experience and it motivated me to do more. It was on this trip where I first heard about the trek to Everest Base Camp and I was keen to register immediately.

What made you decide to take on such a massive trek for UNICEF?

I love a challenge, especially when it is helping those who need it most. I believe that when you are granted an opportunity to help anyone in anyway, you should take it, which is why I trekked to Everest Base Camp in order to raise money for UNICEF.

You are clearly really involved and invested in the art of giving back to the community, what do you think is so exciting about being able to take on an adventure as well as give to a cause you care about?

Taking on an adventure when you know you are making a positive impact on the lives of those who are constantly faced with challenges makes it rewarding. It is so motivating when you have a goal, not only the goal of the adventure you’re undertaking, but also the goal of making a significant change.

"I believe that when you are granted an opportunity to help anyone in anyway, you should take it."

What are your total funds raised for Unicef so far? Are there any key fundraising ideas that have been the bulk of your success?

To date, I have raised $5,647.56. I found the best way to fundraise for me was to talk about my upcoming adventure to everyone, as well as posting the link to my fundraising page on all my social media accounts. I informed people of significant facts, for example, how 5 cents can provide clean drinking water for 2 days. This way people would understand how far their unwanted change would go, and know that no donation is too small.

What have been some of the highlights of your fundraising experience so far?

Every time someone donated, it would make my day. Watching how quickly everyone’s donations added up was a highlight. All it takes is a little amount from lots of people and you can make a world of difference.

What have been your biggest challenges in taking on an Inspired Adventure? How did you overcome this?

Initially, I think fundraising was a challenge, because I didn’t want to feel as though I was hassling people. It was tricky to find that happy medium where you have to let people know without being too pushy. Once I found a way to fundraise, which suited my personality, I was excited to inform people of where their donations were going and what they were providing for children living in developing countries.

Have you noticed any changes or transformation in your life since taking on your first adventure?

I have always been an adventurous person with a love for travel. After this recent trip, I have discovered that I have a newfound love for trekking and I am definitely keen to go on a trek again, somewhere around the world.

"It is so motivating when you have a goal, not only the goal of the adventure you’re undertaking, but also the goal of making a significant change."

What advice would you offer to other people looking to complete a challenge like this?

What are you waiting for? Just do it!

What inspired you to take on your first Inspired Adventure for UN Women?

So many factors led me to taking on my first Inspired Adventure with UN Women but the key inspiration is my mum. Over 35 years ago, she left Vietnam along with her family in search for a better life. It takes a lot of bravery to do what they did, not knowing where they’d end up, facing dangers I can’t begin to comprehend. We are so lucky to have our family all here in Australia, but so many are not so lucky. I’m inspired to help those who stayed, who are a part of the country’s story and culture and, where I can, I’d like help their communities grow and increase their quality of life. This adventure will be nothing like her journey, I know I’ll be safe, happy and well fed, but this ride is in homage to mum’s story.

What made you decide to cycle for UN Women?

Last year I made a resolution to give back more. I looked up volunteering programs overseas because the idea of seeing the world while helping a community grow really appealed to me. UN Women is a great cause and one of the best things about this adventure is the bang for buck. For 12 days of our time, we’ve contributed over $100,000 to projects in Vietnam and Cambodia. Our funds go directly to projects that empower women in Vietnam and Cambodia. We’ve been getting project updates from UN Women and can see our funds already making a difference.

What do you think is so exciting about being able to take on an adventure as well as give to a cause you care about?

I feel like that this adventure has purpose, riding for a cause, travelling to a foreign country, camaraderie with the team … we could be just raising the funds. But there is something more engaging – more personal – by combining both the travel and contributing to a truly worthy cause. I’m so excited about visiting the project sites, meeting those making a difference directly to their communities and travelling with like-minded people.

What are your total funds raised for UN Women so far? Are there any key fundraising ideas that have contributed to the bulk of your success?

So far I’ve raised just over $6,000, about half of this was raised through fundraising events and the other half from donations from my network of family, friends and colleagues. I organised a high tea in October at the Burbury Hotel here in Canberra where we raised $1,500. It required a lot of work in the background, but I had so much support from the loves in my life and local businesses as well.

What have been some of the highlights of your fundraising experience so far?

Definitely the highlight is seeing donations come through from people you don’t expect. People who I met years back and hardly see, uni student friends and family, people who I have just met … seeing their names give me the biggest smile. It is a nice feeling to know that other people believe in the cause and that your support network is wider than you think.

What have been your biggest challenges in taking on an Inspired Adventure? How did you overcome this?

I think the biggest challenge was organising the fundraising events. I love organising events, shindigs and parties, but you can only stretch yourself so far. The events were very successful and fun, and I’m really lucky that I had the support of family, friends and work colleagues. My work colleagues literally just picked up an existing event they were organising and decided that all the funds went to my ride.

Have you noticed any changes or transformation in your life since taking on your first adventure?

Besides the physical changes I’ve noticed from training (oh my thighs!), I have found myself giving more to other causes, even if it’s just $10 here or there. I’m also thoroughly enjoying learning more about UN Women. The more I learn, the more I want dive in headfirst and help.

What advice would you offer to other people looking to complete a challenge like this?

Ask for help. It’s not unreasonable to fundraise the travel costs. Selling chocolates is a slow way of making a little bit of money. Remember there is a support vehicle driving behind you the whole way so just do it!
